Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Scott Bjorklund
Duluth Entry
Tuesday was a busy day for the Duluth ship canal! Burns Harbor departed at 08:29 (Central) this morning with UTAC pellets for Indiana Harbor; Algoma Guardian arrived a while after at 09:03 to most likely load Minntac pellets for either Hamilton or Quebec City. After a long afternoon lacking in ship traffic, we had several vessels arrive and depart in a short amount of time. Arthur M. Anderson departed with Blast Furnace Trim for Gary Works at 18:48. After the Anderson came, a twofer arrival with Federal Montreal, arriving at 19:12 with Turkish cement, and Paul R. Tregurtha, arriving empty at 19:20 for Port Terminal. To end the evening, Hon. James L. Oberstar arrived at 19:52 with coal from Toledo destined for the C. Reiss Dock; the coal will eventually be delivered to the UTAC mine.

As of Tuesday night, Hon. James L. Oberstar was unloading at C. Reiss, Algoma Guardian was loading at CN #6, Federal Montreal was unloading at Ash Grove, and Paul R. Tregurtha was taking a delay at Port Terminal. Hon. James L. Oberstar is expected to depart mid-morning empty for Marquette. Joseph L. Block is expected around the same time, arriving with limestone for either CN #6 or Hallett Dock 5. Algoma Guardian may depart sometime Wednesday with iron ore pellets. Finally, Paul R. Tregurtha may depart in the evening with coal depending on their arrival at the SMET dock.

Superior Entry
Whitefish Bay departed early Tuesday morning at 01:14 (Central) with Hibtac pellets for Stelco’s Lake Erie Works at Nanticoke. Stewart J. Cort arrived soon after at 01:52 to load Hibtac pellets at BNSF #5 for Burns Harbor. As of Tuesday night, Stewart J. Cort was still loading at BNSF while Tim S. Dool waited at anchor outside the Superior Entry. Philip R. Clarke was still undergoing repairs at Fraser Shipyards. Stewart J. Cort may depart early Wednesday morning for Burn Harbor; Tim S. Dool would arrive to load next.

Two Harbors, MN – Gary Putney
Edgar B. Speer was outbound from Two Harbors for the Gary Works. Michipicoten is loading at the shiploader, probably for the Canadian Soo. American Integrity is upbound in the upper St. Marys for Two Harbors.

Thunder Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
With the party over and coasts in need of guarding, CCGS Samuel Risley departed the northern side of Keefer Terminal around 13:00. The cutter appeared to tend to a buoy on the Mission River before officially heading outbound for Lake Superior at 15:23. No destination has been set on her AIS as of Tuesday night, but it seems likely the Risley will be making her way back down to Sarnia, ON. Baie St. Paul backed in at Thunder Bay Terminals to cap off a quiet day of traffic at 16:01.

Blacky is still at Keefer Terminal, while Osogovo remains on the hook.

Brevort, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
John J. Boland arrived at 02:30 to load sand. Buffalo, NY, would not be a surprising destination for the laker after she leaves the Michigan coast.

Grand Haven, MI – Noah H.
Great Republic and her pyramid superstructure towered over the Grand Haven beach upon her 07:06 arrival, the opener for a very busy shipping day. She brought stone from Port Inland to deposit at the Verplank dock for what is only her second visit of the season. Shortly after, Meredith Ashton dropped by at 08:55 to perform a possible barge switcheroo and was already gone less than an hour later. Next up was the Algoma Innovator, bringing salt from Goderich to join the Great Republic at Verplank. Like her dock-mate, this is only the Innovator’s second visit of the season. The first laker to arrive was also the first to leave, as the Great Republic headed off at 14:17 to return to Port Inland. Later in the night, the Innovator would follow with her own departure at 21:31, with a destination of Meldrum Bay. That concluded a bustling day of activity, and perhaps for a little while longer, as there are no current ships on their way to Grand Haven.

Muskegon, MI – Noah H.
Meredith Ashton had a busy morning of moving barges around — she departed Muskegon at 07:38, only to head right back after a quick stop at Grand Haven. She entered the piers again at 11:14, and stayed out for the remainder of the day. Grand River Navigation’s river class vessel Calumet made an arrival at 15:58 to unload stone from Port Inland at Cobb Verplank. This visit is the first part of a two-port unload; Calumet departed at 21:42 to conclude her first Muskegon trip of the season, a short one, and she is on her way to Holland for round two.

Stoneport, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder departed at 05:45 for Detroit, MI, where they will unload at the Levy Brennan St. Dock.

Saginaw River – Joshua Hebeisen
Olive L. Moore/Menominee pulled up to the Wirt Stone Dock in Saginaw, MI, around 01:00 to unload stone from Port Dolomite, MI. Casting off with a partial cargo left in their holds, the tug/barge combo turned in the basin and headed up for the Burroughs/Levy Dock to finish the job, tying up at around 08:30.

Meanwhile, Algoma Compass was winding down the river with stone from Meldrum Bay, ON. Just like Moore/Menominee, the Canadian would deliver the first portion of her cargo to Saginaw’s Wirt Stone Dock at 11:00, later shifting to the GM/Levy Dock downriver around 13:30. Miles to the north, the Moore pushed her barge outbound the river at around the same time, once again headed to Port Dolomite. The Compass would clear at midnight bound for Goderich, ON.

Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Algoma Intrepid arrived 14:58 Tuesday and is loading at Compass Minerals. This is the Intrepid’s ninth appearance here this season.

Monroe, MI – Bill Kloss
Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 left for Alpena, MI.

Toledo, OH – Bill Kloss
Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader delivered ore to Ironville. Albert/Margaret departed to Green Bay. Herbert C. Jackson is preparing to leave for Burns Harbor once out of dry dock.

Marblehead, OH – Bill Kloss
Sam Laud loaded stone at Holcim and left for Cleveland. Mark W. Barker went to anchor to wait for a spot at the loader. She went to the dock once the Laud cleared.

Sandusky, OH – Bill Kloss
John D. Leitch departed with coal for Hamilton, ON.

Cleveland, OH – Bill Kloss
Departing were Algoma Buffalo to Montreal with salt, American Courage light to Calcite, Mark W. Barker empty to Marblehead and Federal Shimanto for Burns Harbor, IN. Sam Laud arrived from Marblehead with a split load of stone for RiverDock and West 3rd St.

Fairport Harbor, OH – Bill Kloss
Frontenac departed with salt with a destination of Toronto. Defiance/Ashtabula arrived to unload stone at Osborne.

Erie, PA – Bill Kloss
H. Lee White had stone for Carmeuse. She left for Calcite once empty.

Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The 730-foot self-unloader CSL Niagara arrived off Lackawanna at 12:20 on July 18 came in the South Entrance. They turned up the Outer Harbor and then backed into Gateway Metroport for the bulk loading apron about halfway down the Main Dock. Once secure there, she started taking on a partial coal cargo via portable conveyor. Around 17:00 that evening, the NACC Alicudi departed the Welland Canal at Port Colborne and then went to anchor off Windmill Point about an hour later. They were waiting again in the same spot as last time for the same reason — windy conditions in Buffalo.

Nanticoke, ON – Bill Kloss
Algoberta finally finished loading and departed with petroleum products for Sarnia. Algocanada is now loading at Imperial Oil. CSL Tadoussac unloaded at Stelco and departed for Superior, WI. Edwin H. Gott took her place at Stelco with more ore for the furnaces. Also at Stelco is Algoma Sault.
