Thunder Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
After more than eight days in the vicinity of port, saltwater vessel Blacky finally departed at 20:03 Saturday evening. Whatever she loaded at MobilEx is now on its way south to Santerém, Brazil. The anchored Osogovo would promptly arrive for Thunder Bay Terminals with an official port call time of 20:23 — well played, cap’n. Algoma Sault was inbound the breakwater at 23:25 to take on grain at Viterra A.
Federal Mosel and Isa will be spending the night at anchor. The two salties claimed their spots in the lake about 12 hours apart in the early morning and early evening, respectively.
Ludington, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
It just doesn’t seem right to see the always-busy SS Badger sitting idle at her dock in mid-July. Usually a fixture out on Lake Michigan during the warmer months, the coal-fired car ferry has been stuck in her home port since early Friday morning after a counterweight broke off the dock’s loading apron. While Badger herself appears to be unscathed, vehicles and passengers are rendered unable to board for daily (and now nightly!) cross-lake journeys while the loading ramp is out of commission. Emergency repairs are currently underway, and with any luck, the beloved vessel will be firing the boilers back up late next week.
Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Algoma Compass cleared 05:04 Friday upbound for Chicago with salt. Algoma Innovator arrived 18:30 Friday and is loading at Compass Minerals. Algoma Buffalo is expected next for salt.
Port Huron, MI – Sarnia, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Algoma Discovery is officially on summer vacation in Sarnia, though the veteran bulker would be the first to tell you she’d rather be soaking up rays out on the lake instead. After a week of speculation following her sudden arrival on July 15, it’s now clear that the Discovery will be laid-up at North Slip for the foreseeable future. Look for her to (hopefully) come out during the fall grain rush.
