Thunder Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
A little déjà vu settled over Baie du Tonnerre midmorning as Viking Polaris arrived for the second time in trois days. The big cruise ship had just paid a visit to T-Bay on Friday, but Sunday’s port call was the start of a new 14-day itinerary with 378 fresh passengers on board. The previous group had disembarked at Duluth, MN, on Saturday morning in what was a quick turnaround. Running about an hour behind schedule from her last visit, Polaris made port for Pool 6 at 07:37 and later cleared for Silver Islet, ON, at 19:18. Other traffic on the day included Portuguese-flagged saltie Barbro G arriving at 02:28 for P&H and Canadian laker Algoma Sault departing at 20:57 for the Twin Ports. The Sault spent Sunday beneath the spouts at Viterra A and may be discharging that cargo at the newly reopened Elevator A in Duluth, MN. Her sister Algoma Niagara made a similar trip earlier this summer.
Osogovo remained at Thunder Bay Terminals; Federal Mosel and Isa are anchored out in the lake waiting to load.
Marquette, MI – Noah H.
On Saturday, Victory/Maumee arrived at 17:50 to join Joseph L. Block at the ore docks. The pairing would be somewhat short-lived, as the latter departed for Indiana Harbor at 22:10, following a sinter unload and ore load. On Sunday morning, the tug/barge would follow with their own 04:08 departure, headed to Toledo to unload. Another tug, Joyce L. VanEnkevort is slated to arrive soon, and the American Spirit before that.
Drummond Island, MI – Joshua Hebeisen

Port Dolomite, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 pulled up to Carmeuse Cedarville just before noon, loading stone for Grand Haven, MI, before departing at 16:30.
Grand Haven, MI – Noah H.
Sam Laud made their first Grand Haven visit on Saturday, carrying stone from Drummond Island for Meekhof’s D&M upon her 03:34 arrival. Her stay would not be long, as the Laud was already empty and on her way to Indiana Harbor at 08:39. Apparently, she really enjoyed her short stay at Grand Haven, since she was back the next night to double her season total of visits. The Laud saddled back up to the Meekhof’s D&M dock once again, this time with aggregate from Indiana Harbor, following her 22:42 arrival.
Cheboygan, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Olive L. Moore/Menominee arrived minutes into Sunday morning with stone from Bruce Mines, ON. Not wanting to get a speeding ticket, the pair carefully snuck past slumbering USCGC Mackinaw at a cool 1.6 knots. After a quick unload along the Cheboygan River, old Olive and her barge cleared at 04:57 citation-free for the Soo. None the wiser, Mackinaw continued to get her beauty sleep ahead of her appearance at this week’s Coast Guard Festival in Grand Haven, MI.
Calcite, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Michipicoten departed the south berth at 11:03 with stone for Sault Ste. Marie, ON’s Algoma Steel mill. Interlake’s Hon. James L. Oberstar was chomping at the bit to take over at 11:14, and she spent the remainder of the day loading for Superior, WI. The third of three classic lakers, Saginaw, went to anchor out in the lake around midnight.

The New York/DS 509A arrived with asphalt from Marathon in Detroit for Suite Kote in Tonawanda at 07:30 on July 23. They incurred a slight delay waiting for the Ferry St. bridge to open and then again at the Black Rock Lock. The barge was secured on the Upper Guide Wall while they waited for the lock to open at 09:30. After locking through downbound, the New York brought her barge down to Suite Kote around 10:30, winded off the old Wickwire plant, and tied up shortly after. They plan to head out when the lock opens tomorrow morning around 08:00.
