Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Scott Bjorklund
Duluth Entry
The only ship action Wednesday took place early in the morning for the Duluth Entry. Philip R. Clarke departed with iron ore pellets at 07:28 (Central) Thursday morning. American Integrity, which switched orders from BNSF to CN due to dock issues in Superior, arrived at 07:41 to load UTAC pellets at CN #6 for Cleveland. As of Thursday afternoon, American Integrity was the only vessel on the Duluth side. American Integrity is estimated to depart Friday afternoon with iron ore pellets. Joseph L. Block is the next expected arrival, due early Saturday morning with limestone for Hallett Dock 5.
Superior Entry
As of Thursday afternoon, G3 Marquis was still waiting for loading to resume at BNSF. Whitefish Bay also continued to wait outside Superior at anchor. Algoma Guardian is expected to arrive mid-morning Friday to load after Whitefish Bay.
Two Harbors, MN – Gary Putney
The Burns Harbor after departing Two Harbors is heading for Indiana Harbor. As of 18:00 on July 27, Michipicoten is currently loading at Two Harbors, John G. Munson is currently East of Keweenaw heading for Gary after loading in Two Harbors, and Edwin H. Gott is East of Keweenaw heading for Two Harbors.
Silver Bay, MN – Gary Putney
Stewart J. Cort departed Silver Bay on July 26 at 20:21 for Burns Harbor.
Marquette, MI – Noah H.
Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader started their voyage to Cleveland at 01:56, vacating the ore docks to allow the Hon. James L. Oberstar to arrive. However, it wasn’t until around 07:00 that Interlake’s sharp looking classic tied up, as she was possibly waiting for the dock to reset. Once settled in, she made a fine pairing with fleet mate Herbert C. Jackson at the south dock. That photo-worthy event did not last long, as Herbie was on her way to Detroit by 11:15, leaving only the Oberstar through the rest of the day.
Chicago, IL – Joshua Hebeisen
The American Great Lakes Port Association Conference is being hosted in the heart of the Windy City this year, and festivities kicked off Thursday night with the christening of The Great Lakes Towing Company’s aptly-named pair of tugs: Illinois and Indiana. The newest members of the G-tug fleet were decked out with colorful flags and banners to match that paired well with a shiny coat of red and green.
Holland, MI – Noah H.
Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 arrived at 23:48, sneaking in just before the deadline, to head up to Padnos on the east side of Lake Macatawa.
Grand Haven, MI – Noah H.
Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 arrived at 14:07 from Burns Harbor and headed up to the Verplank dock to unload. From there it was back down to Holland following a 21:25 departure.
Muskegon, MI – Noah H.
No traffic at Muskegon on Thursday; however, a flurry of the American Mariner, Sam Laud, and Pearl Mist is expected in the next day or two, so the harbor will not be empty for much longer.
Ludington, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
A forgotten gray face has finally been fired up for service, though not quite in the way many were expecting. Ludington-based LT-805, a former U.S. Army Tug recently purchased by Interlake Steamship Co., was called into action on Thursday to aid local crews in the aftermath of last week’s Badger dilemma. The tug has sat idle next to laid-up corporate cousin Spartan since joining the Interlake family in 2021, and after casting off from her two-year’s berth, would at last get the chance to shine by stretching her legs in the harbor. Besides moral support, her role in the repair efforts was unclear. A crane barge and smaller tug are also on the scene.

Departing were Evans Spirit to Sarnia and Algoma Conveyor to Goderich and American Spirit after unloading at Torco. Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader delivered ore to Ironville.
Kingsville, ON – Bill Kloss
Saginaw unloaded at Southwestern Sales and then left for Drummond Island.
Marblehead, OH – Bill Kloss
Robert S. Pierson loaded limestone and left to deliver at Southwestern Sales in Kingsville. She returned to Marblehead once empty.
Sandusky, OH – Bill Kloss
CSL Niagara arrived for coal at Norfolk Southern.
Cleveland, OH – Bill Kloss
Indiana Harbor departed for Duluth, and after she cleared the breakwall, American Courage proceeded to the Bulk Terminal to load another shuttle. Thursday morning arrivals were the cruise ship Ocean Voyager to the Port Dock 28W, Algoma Buffalo to load road salt at Cargill and Harvest Spirit to unload steel coils at Dock 24W at the Port. Petite Forte/St. Marys Cement departed for Bath, ON. Ocean Voyager departed to Port Colborne once the passengers toured the city and were back aboard, and Harvest Spirit left for Monroe. Federal Cedar is still at the Port docks.

The saltie Barnacle is unloading at the Pinney Dock.

Walter J. McCarthy, Jr. unloaded at the P&C Dock.
Nanticoke, ON – Bill Kloss
