Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Scott Bjorklund
Duluth Entry
Great Lakes Fleet motor vessel John G. Munson arrived at 15:27 (Central) Tuesday afternoon to load blast furnace trim at Hallett Dock 5. Indiana Harbor finally departed at 19:34 with iron ore pellets; Walter J. McCarthy Jr. arrived at 20:02 to load next at CN #6. John G. Munson departed at 23:07 that night with a partial load of blast furnace trim; they would load iron ore pellets in Two Harbors. Atlantic Huron arrived empty at 23:34 for a delay at Port Terminal. For Wednesday, Atlantic Huron was the only action for the Duluth Ship Canal. They departed at 10:31 empty to wait outside Superior.
As of Wednesday night, Walter J. McCarthy Jr. was loading at CN #6 while Finnborg was sitting at Elevator A. Walter J. McCarthy Jr. is estimated to depart early Thursday morning. Finnborg may depart sometime Thursday. Finally, American Century is expected late evening.
Superior Entry
Mesabi Miner departed at 16:17 Tuesday afternoon (Central) with Hibtac pellets for Burns Harbor. Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin arrived at 16:28 to load next at BNSF. Burns Harbor arrived at 06:22 Wednesday morning for a delay at Lakehead Pipeline. Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin departed at 09:48 with Hibtac pellets for Stelco’s Lake Erie Works in Nanticoke. Stewart J. Cort then arrived at 10:38 for the usual load of Hibtac pellets. As of Wednesday night, Stewart J. Cort was loading at BNSF, Atlantic Huron was waiting outside Superior at anchor, and Burns Harbor was taking a delay at Lakehead. Stewart J. Cort is estimated to depart sometime Thursday morning, and Atlantic Huron should load next. American Integrity is expected late Thursday night for BNSF.
Thunder Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Mottler made up the day’s only traffic, departing MobilEx for Montreal, QC, and beyond at 21:01.
Vessels in port as of Wednesday night include Barnacle at Thunder Bay Terminals, Federal Cedar at Keefer, and Federal Kumano at P&H; Federal Oshima, Federal Frontier, and Federal Montreal are lounging out in the lake.
Port Dolomite, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
A certain river boat mustered up the “Courage” to leave port for Cleveland, OH, at 22:07. Saginaw was waiting at anchor among the islands and headed inbound minutes later.
Port Inland, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Fresh off loading gypsum near Tawas City, MI, Sam Laud arrived to top off her holds with stone. She was back out on the lake less than 4 hours later heading for Waukegan, IL.
Marinette, MI – Menominee, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Making her second appearance on the Menominee River this season, Algoma Compass backed into port at 07:17 with a partial load of salt. She would empty her holds at Marinette Fuel & Dock Co. before heading out for Meldrum Bay, ON, at 15:27. The vessel’s two-part NaCl cargo came from the mines at Goderich, ON, with the first half being delivered to Fox River Terminals in Green Bay, WI.
Sturgeon Bay, WI – Guest_SB
Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Challenger arrived at Bay Ship on Wednesday afternoon. They are currently moored on the face.
Over the past weekend, one of the newbuild LNG barges launched and is now on berth 9.
Manistee, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Manitowoc arrived at 03:41 with her usual cargo of coal, casually sailing down to TES Filer City on what appeared to be an uneventful trip. Unfortunately, it would end up being anything but. Departing empty at 14:32, the Grand River laker would immediately come to a stop and drop anchor close to shore with what was reportedly a fuel leak. The U.S. Coast Guard was on the scene shortly to assist in containing the spill. Manitowoc was still anchored in the lake as of late Wednesday night with no word on the extent of the damage.
Calcite, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Philip R. Clarke arrived with zeroes on the clock to load stone for Duluth, MN. Her 00:00 entry would be followed up by a 07:30 Manitoulin arrival, with the two lakers eventually departing for Lake Huron at 15:33 and 21:25, respectively. As the Clarke steamed north, Manitoulin set course for Sarnia, ON, to the south. Great Republic was in to load after the latter cleared.
Stoneport, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Kaye E. Barker rode in for stone late Wednesday evening, her ATA once again hidden thanks to spotty AIS coverage.
Meldrum Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Herbert C. Jackson departed at 09:30 for Muskegon, MI, with a much smaller load of stone than the port’s previous visitor.
Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Algoma Buffalo arrived at 15:11 and is loading at Compass Minerals. John D. Leitch arrived at 17:30 and tied up North Pier to load salt next.
Monroe, MI – Bill Kloss
Paul R. Tregurtha delivered coal to DTE. New York/Double Skin 509A
Toledo, OH – Bill Kloss
Wilfred Sykes departed to Burns Harbor, Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader is at Torco and fleetmate Dirk S, VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader is unloading at Ironville. Arrivals were G.L Ostrander/Integrity and Algoma Niagara.
Sandusky, OH – Bill Kloss
Algoma Transport arrived to load coal at Norfolk Southern.
Cleveland, OH – Bill Kloss
Heavy lift vessel Imke departed for Montreal. Mark W. Barker unloaded at Osborne then went to anchor in Lake Erie to wait for Calumet to unload at Ontario Stone as the old channel of the river was blocked. The Baby Barker will be loading road salt at Cargill once she can get to the dock. Meredith Ashton and Manitou are delivering the heavy lift cargo to Cliffs, including a 350 ton diffuser. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder is on the shuttles, Sea Eagle II/St. Marys Cement II is unloading at St. Marys and Narie is unloading steel coils at the Port. Cruise ship Viking Polaris was at the Port’s passenger dock. Departing later were Calumet, Viking Polaris and Petite Forte/St. Marys Cement.

CSL Tadoussac is at Morton to load salt.
Ashtabula, OH – Bill Kloss
American Mariner delivered limestone to Kinder Morgan.
Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
NACC Alicudi was the first arrival of August when she was helped up the river stern first for Holcim by the Vermont at 18:00 on August 1.
Nanticoke, ON – Bill Kloss
Algosea had a relatively quick load at Imperial Oil. She departed to Sarnia after only being at the dock for 14 hours. A typical load time is 2-3 days.
