August 30
Walter J. McCarthy Jr. departed at 01:01 (Central) Wednesday morning with iron ore pellets for Cleveland. H. Lee White departed a little later at 02:49 with petroleum coke for Thorold. Michipicoten arrived at 04:46 to load iron ore pellets at CN #6. Edwin H. Gott arrived at 12:18 from Two Harbors to take a delay at Port Terminal. Michipicoten departed at 13:56 with iron ore pellets for Algoma Steel. John G. Munson was the last arrival for Wednesday, entering Duluth at 23:24 empty for CN.
August 31
Manitoulin arrived at 10:40 Thursday morning with grain from the Viterra elevators in Thunder Bay; they docked at General Mills, Superior for unloading. Mesabi Miner departed not long after at 11:12 with iron ore pellets for Toledo. Edwin H. Gott departed at 12:04 for Gary. Mark W. Barker arrived at 13:44 with Cargill salt for Envirotech Hallett #8.
September 1
John G. Munson departed at 06:12 Friday morning with iron ore pellets for Indiana Harbor. Joyce L. VanEnkevort arrived with limestone from Port Inland at 10:50 to unload at Graymont. Federal Fraser departed at 16:04 empty for Thunder Bay. Joyce L. VanEnkevort departed at 20:53 empty for Silver Bay. Michipicoten arrived at 22:40 to load iron ore pellets at CN. Finally, Mark W. Barker departed at 23:12 with iron ore pellets for Toledo
As of early Saturday morning, Michipicoten was loading at CN#6. Burns Harbor is expected Saturday mid-morning for fuel before loading in Silver Bay.
Superior Entry
August 30
Baie Comeau departed at 07:34 (Central) Wednesday morning with iron ore pellets for Quebec City. Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin arrived at 07:53 to load at BNSF; they departed at 21:29 with iron ore pellets for Quebec City. American Integrity arrived at 22:12 Wednesday to load next at BNSF.
August 31
American Integrity departed at 18:44 Thursday evening for Conneaut.
As of early Saturday morning, Manitoulin was still unloading at General Mills. Manitoulin is estimated to depart later Saturday morning with iron ore pellets. CSL Laurentien is expected to arrive late morning for BNSF. CSL Tadoussac is also due on Saturday, but will most likely anchor to wait.
Two Harbors, MN – Gary Putney
At 19:00, the Edgar B. Speer was at the tip of Keweenaw heading for Gary Works. Finally, we have the Whitefish Bay loading in Two Harbors.
Marquette, MI – Arthur Pickering
The Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader arrived Wednesday at the Shiras Dock in the lower harbor and at the ore dock in the upper harbor on Thursday morning. The Kaye E. Barker arrived at the ore dock on Friday. Due on Monday is the Lee A. Tregurtha, and the Victory/Maumee is due in on Tuesday.
St. Joseph, MI – Benton Harbor, MI – Michael Moran
Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 was in town on September 1. The pair is unloading slag at Rieth-Riley and will depart sometime after midnight on September 2. Donuts tonight were, of course, Red Coach. Thank you again for all the community “Doughnations” to fund these treats! Manitowoc is due on the evening of Saturday the 2nd around 19:00, going to Dock 63.
Muskegon, MI – Noah H.
On Wednesday, rare visitor Algoma Compass arrived at 02:33 to unload stone at Cobb Verplank. This appears to be their first visit since May. The unloading process was all done just before noon, so the Compass was on her way to Bruce Mines by 11:47.
A few days later, on Friday, Arthur M. Anderson made a very rare visit to unload Port Inland stone at Cobb Verplank. This appears to be the legendary ship’s first Muskegon trip in nearly 2 years, according to logs. For the few times a Great Lakes Fleet vessel comes to Muskegon, it tends to be the Great Republic instead. At any rate, the AMA finished up around 19:30 and headed outbound for the lake. Their next destination is Duluth.
Monroe, MI – Bill Kloss
American Century departed to Duluth-Superior, and Paul R. Tregurtha weighed anchor and moved to DTE to unload coal. Once empty the Queen of the Lakes departed for Superior, WI. Harvest Spirit is still unloading steel coils.
Toledo, OH – Bill Kloss
Radcliffe R. Latimer is at Midwest Terminals, and American Spirit unloaded at Torco. John J. Boland is loading at CSX. American Spirit left early in the evening for Two Harbors.
Sandusky, OH – Bill Kloss
After loading at Norfolk Southern, CSL Niagara departed for a return to Nanticoke.
Cleveland, OH – Bill Kloss
A busy day in Cleveland saw the arrivals of ATBs New York/Double Skin 509A with liquid asphalt for Marathon and Petite Forte/St. Marys Cement to the Holcim Cement plant as well as cruise ships Ocean Voyager and Viking Polaris to the Port passenger docks. Wilfred Sykes unloaded at Cliffs and then left for Drummond Island. American Courage is running another shuttle. The evening saw Ocean Voyager leave for Port Colborne and Viking Polaris head to Detroit.
Grand River, OH – Fairport Harbor, OH – Bill Kloss
Defiance/Ashtabula departed for Cedarville, and Frontenac arrived to load at Morton Salt.
Ashtabula, OH – Bill Kloss
CSL St-Laurent departed for Superior, WI, once empty. Federal Franklin moved to the Pinney dock to unload.
Nanticoke, ON – Bill Kloss
Algonova and Algosea are loading at Imperial Oil.
