Boardman/Harriman rechristened at DeTour

Last Wednesday, the John W. Boardman/Lewis G. Harriman was rechristened on the 100th anniversary of her 1923 launch during a ceremony at DeTour, Mich., where the ship’s forward end now resides. Jill Vander Meulen, who owns the structure along with husband Marc, did the honors, smashing a bottle of champagne against the bow. The rain held off just long enough for the guests to finish lunch after the ceremony. Amy Miller, the great-granddaughter of John W. Boardman, was there for the event, as was Bob Larsen, who sailed aboard the boat. The salute was sounded by a Tyfon 425 whistle which came from the USS Ranger, an aircraft carrier scrapped in Brownsville, TX, but is the same model that was once used on many Great Lakes vessels.
