Bill Kloss Port report
Toledo, OH: Friday night
arrivals were Great Republic to Torco for layup and Sharon MI/Huron Spirit with steel coils for Midwest
Terminals. Saturday arrivals were Edgar B. Speer to CSX, Philip R. Clarke to Torco and Olive L.
Moore/Menominee, all for layup. Escorted by CCGC Griffon, Sharon MI departed 12:58 to Cleveland.
On the morning of January 20th, the tug-barge CLYDE S VANENKEVORT – ERIE TRADER became the largest vessel (combined) at 845-feet to ever go up the Buffalo River when they arrived with the last load of sand for the season. She headed straight in the North Entrance without assistance on her way up to CSI. As they crunched into the freshly refrozen ice, the big ATB came to a stop off the USS LITTLE ROCK in the Watson basin. No matter what the captain did, even with 10,000 horsepower at his disposal, he could not get the TRADER to turn towards the City Ship Canal. He tried backing up, swinging hard to Starboard, twisting and turning any which way but loose. Dropping the barge and disconnecting to break ice wasn’t an option for him either because he was worried about the ice and wind causing the barge to drift around. This could have resulted in a grounding, or if the anchors were down, she could have run one over and damaged her bottom. He was also worried about having trouble re-connecting the pins into the notch after breaking ice so instead of that idea, the Captain called for a tug. They spent the afternoon and evening sitting in the ice waiting for help off the Naval Park.
