The H LEE WHITE began stirring from her winter slumber at the Frontier elevator during early March. She finished unloading her storage cargo of wheat on the 1st, a little bit early this time. The reason was that the ship’s bow thruster needed some serious repairs and she had to be lightened up to do the work. After the cargo was off, they slid her ahead on the dock until the entire bow section was exposed to the end of the old bridge pier at the foot of Michigan St. A large crane was set up in the road to help with repairs and lift larger parts (like the thruster’s old gear box) with more room to swing the boom. General Mills went all out for them and had gates installed to close off the road with a guard posted to keep the public out of the work area.
The 2024 Buffalo shipping season kicked off on March 23rd with the departure of the H LEE WHITE from the Frontier Elevator. She backed all the way out past the breakwalls without stopping to wind in the harbor at 1PM. They turned in the open lake and headed for Sandusky under cold and cloudy conditions that afternoon.
