The ocean going freighter FEDERAL HUDSON came in for Lackawanna with a load of sugar from Brazil for the Sucros Sourcing refinery on the afternoon of the 18th around 12:30. The wind was up so they used the tugs OKLAHOMA and VERMONT for the assist. Coming in lightly loaded at only 22-feet of draft on her, the ship presented a large amount of “sail area” that made her tough to handle. The tugs came just outside the South Entrance to help guide her in and get the big saltie headed up the Outer Harbor. After coming to a stop off the CRH plant, they had a lot of trouble backing because of the breeze blowing in off the lake. It took multiple attempts just to get the stern tow line hooked up. After getting the HUDSON centered up by pulling & pushing for all they had, the tugs finally were able to wrestle her into the Lackawanna Canal for Gateway Metroport. The harbor pilot told the tugs that he was unable to use more than 20% of her engine power due to FedNav’s company policy on fuel consumption. He stated that he could only throttle up in an emergency situation and that it would take five minutes to disconnect the engine’s governor system. They did all right anyway and HUDSON slowly backed her way in. She was secured off the bulk unloading apron near the sugar storage sheds at the South End of the Main Dock. Sucros does not like to pay for weekend overtime work so unloading operations didn’t begin until the morning of the 19th.
