PORT REPORT  1/22/2025

PORT WELLER,CANADA                           [CAPWE]

Rt Hon Paul J Martin

BUFFALO,NEW YORK                                  [USBUF]-Brian Wroblewski
The MANITOULIN and AMERICAN MARINER were both headed for Buffalo during mid-January but running into trouble the whole way down. The MARINER got stuck trying to back out of the General Mills elevator in Superior and needed help from a tug on the 15th. She was late getting to the Soo on the 16th and had to receive special permission to lock through as the last downbound for the season. Both boats eventually arrived in the Sarnia Anchorage and then waited in queue for the large Canadian breaker SAMUEL RISLEY to escort them down to Lake Erie. The MANITOULIN was part of the first group of boats headed down with her on the 17th. At the Detroit River Entrance, the smaller breaker GRIFFON took over for the escort East down the lake. They reached open waters off Point Peelee on the morning of the 18th and the MANITOULIN headed for Buffalo on her own. The GRIFFON then turned around & took three waiting ships from there through the ice to Toledo next. The RISELY had taken a break over night in Windsor and headed back to Sarnia to get the MARINER along with a few more late arriving boats for another convoy down to Lake Erie. As the MANITOULIN headed East on lake Erie at reduced speed that afternoon, the AMERICAN MARINER and MARK W. BARKER were escorted South bound out of Sarnia by the RISLEY with the GRIFFON waiting near the Detroit River Light for the convoy to arrive.

The ships all took another break over night in the Detroit River and got going for Lake Erie again on the frigid cold morning of the 19th. Then, around 8AM, back here in Buffalo, the MANITOULIN arrived. She came in the North Entrance, turned down the Outer Harbor, and stopped in the ice. The G-Tug OKLAHOMA made a bunch of high speed runs up and down the Buffalo River to break up about 4 to 5 inches of plate ice before heading out to tow her in. The Watson Basin was the worst section with some spots as bad as 8 inches requiring multiple passes. After about an hour of running all around, the tug finally went over to pick up the tow, stern first for the ADM Standard elevator at 9AM. Brash ice clogged up the stern thruster but it didn’t turn up to be too much of a problem for them. The boat was all secure at the dock by 10:45AM and she began unloading her cargo of Canadian Red Wheat. That afternoon, the AMERICAN MARINER made it out to open waters off Point Peelee and throttled up to lake speed for the run down to Buffalo while the GRIFFON did some track maintenance back towards Detroit. After a long day hitting it hard, the busy breaker hove to in the Colchester Anchorage that evening to give the crew some well deserved rest. She then spent the night on the hooks out there in the ice, under the stars.

The MARINER finally made it to Buffalo on the morning of the 20th and crunched her way through the ice of the North Entrance Channel at 7AM. The OKLAHOMA was there to help and she made about eight runs up and down between the Frontier elevator on the City Ship Canal, out to the lighthouse and back. With her tug alongside to break ice for her, the MARINER crawled her way in. It was a slow go but an uneventful one and the ship was secure for a long winter’s nap around 8AM.

We do not currently have daily summaries for the following ports, but their respective port authority websites post schedules of vessel traffic that are featured below. Each schedule is a miniature webpage within a box. Scroll with your cursor in the box (or slide your finger within the box on a mobile device) to move through the schedule as you would a normal webpage. To move up or down the actual Port Reports page itself, make sure your cursor/finger is outside of the box.
