PORT REPORT   1/26/2025

PORT WELLER,CANADA                           [CAPWE]

Rt Hon Paul J Martin

BUFFALO,NEW YORK                                  [USBUF]-Brian Wroblewski
January 24th was an exercise in futility for the BRISTOL BAY. She spent the whole day from 7:30AM to 4PM trying hopelessly to free the stuck MANITOULIN. They came into port and tied up at the Visiting Ship’s Dock on the Buffalo River for the night around 4:30PM. The BRISTOL BAY took on supplies and fuel to prepare for round three the next day. US and Canadian Coast Guard assets began to mobilize that evening with the NEAH BAY departing Cleveland bound for Buffalo, the SAMUEL RISLEY headed our way from Detroit, and the MACKINAW departing Cheboygan on the way down lake Huron. By this time, the whole saga was playing out on TV in the news media all around the world and it was all over social media.

Things started popping on the morning of the 25th. The NEAH BAY got here first and started breaking out the MANITOULIN right away at 9AM. Coming in for backup was the RISLEY around 10:30 with a USCG MH-65 Dolphin helicopter out of Detroit overhead for air support. The helo took a cruise around the area doing a detailed ice survey to give the breakers a clearer picture of what they were dealing with out there. After circling multiple times out over the lake, they landed at Buffalo International by Signature Air for fuel. Meanwhile, back out in the ice, the NEAH BAY began by breaking around the MANITOULIN, then having her back up a little bit down the track behind them. The NEAH BAY then moved ahead of her to open up some room for the RISLEY to take the lead and start heading West. The BRISTOL BAY then came back out after refueling in Buffalo and all three breakers took up position and led the MANITOULIN out to open waters during the early afternoon. Around 5PM they had her cruising at 9 knots and let her go. NEAH BAY stopped in the ice field abeam of CIP 16 while the RISLEY stopped out near the Safe Water Beacon for the night. The BRISTOL BAY came back to Buffalo and tied up again at the Visiting Ship’s Dock.

We do not currently have daily summaries for the following ports, but their respective port authority websites post schedules of vessel traffic that are featured below. Each schedule is a miniature webpage within a box. Scroll with your cursor in the box (or slide your finger within the box on a mobile device) to move through the schedule as you would a normal webpage. To move up or down the actual Port Reports page itself, make sure your cursor/finger is outside of the box.
