1872:  On 12 December 1872, the Port Huron Times listed the following vessels at winter lay-up at Sarnia, Ontario: Schooners: MARY E PEREW, KINGFISHER, UNADILLA, ONEONTA, AMERICAN, J G MASTEN, PELICAN, UNION, B ALLEN, and CAMDEN; Brigs: DAVID A WELLS, WAGONER, and FRANK D BARKER; Barks: C T MAPLE, EMALINE BATES, and D A VAN VALKENBURG; Steamer: MANITOBA.

1877
1877:  On 12 December 1877, U.S. Marshall Matthews sold the boiler and machinery of the CITY OF PORT HURON at auction in Detroit, Michigan. Darius Cole submitted the winning bid of $1,000.

1898
1898:  The wooden passenger and freight carrier SOO CITY sank at the dock in Holland, Mi after bucking ice while inbound.

1898:  On 12 December 1898, FANNY H (wooden propeller tug, 54 foot, 16 gross tons, built in 1890, at Bay City, Michigan) was sold by J. R. Hitchcock to the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. She underwent a major rebuild in 1908, when she was lengthened to 60 feet.

1898:  On Monday December 12, 1898, the AURORA was fast in the ice at Amherstburg, Ontario, when a watchman smelled smoke. The crew tried to put out the fire, but to no avail. They were taken off the burning vessel by the tug C A LORMAN. The ship burned to the water’s edge, but was salvaged and rebuilt as a barge.

1917
1917:   On this day December 12, 1917, the stern wheeler RAPIDS was crushed by ice at Paducah, Kentucky. Her on board crew of two survived. The Great Lakes has claimed many vessels by crushing them in ice, but it does occur to the south, just not nearly as often.

1925
1925:  SIR THOMAS SHAUGHNESSY stranded on a rocky shoal inside the breakwall at Fairport, Ohio. Hull repairs were listed at over $18,000.

1942
1942:  SPINDLETOP, e.) BADGER STATE was launched December 12, 1942, for the United States Maritime Commission.

1956
1956:  On December 12, 1956, the once-proud passenger vessels EASTERN STATES and GREATER DETROIT were taken out onto Lake St. Clair where they were set afire. All the superstructure was burned off and the hulls were taken to Hamilton, Ontario, where they were scrapped in 1957.

1966
1966:  AMBROSE SHEA, a new Canadian carferry, was hit by a flash fire while under construction by Marine Industries Ltd. at Sorel, Quebec, and sustained over $1 million in damage. Completion of the vessel was delayed by 3 months before it could enter service between North Sydney, NS and Argentia, Newfoundland. The ship arrived at Aliaga, Turkey, for scrapping as d) ERG on June 22, 2000.

1972
1972:  SIR JAMES DUNN went aground in the St. Lawrence near the Thousand Islands Bridge while enroute to Sorel with grain.

1972:  The push tug PRESQUE ISLE was launched December 12, 1972, as (Hull #322) by the Halter Marine Services, Inc., New Orleans, Louisiana.

1975
1975:  WHEAT KING returned to Port Weller Dry Docks on December 12, 1975, for lengthening to the maximum Seaway size of 730 feet overall for the iron ore and grain trade, thus ending her salt water activities.

1987
1987:  One unusual trip for the WOODLAND occurred when she arrived at Toronto, Ontario on December 12, 1987, to load a 155-foot, 135-ton self-unloading unit for delivery to the Verolme Shipyard in Brazil, where the Govan-built Panamax bulk carrier CSL INNOVATOR was being converted to a self-unloader.

1990
1990:  CLIPPER MAJESTIC was abandoned by the crew due to an engine room fire off the coast of Peru. The vessel had been through the Seaway as a) MILOS ISLAND in 1981, MAJESTIC in 1989 and was renamed c) CLIPPER MAJESTIC at Toronto that fall. The damaged ship was towed to Callao, Peru, on December 13, 1990, and repaired. It also traded inland as d) MILLENIUM MAJESTIC in 1999 and was scrapped at Alang, India, as e) MYRA in 2012.

2009
2009:  The Canada Steamship Lines bulk carrier SPRUCEGLEN (ii) went aground near Sault Ste. Marie and had to go to Thunder Bay for repairs.

2010
2010:  The tug ANN MARIE sank in the Saginaw River while tied up for the winter. It was salvaged a few days later.

2022
2022:  The saltwater vessel Patagonman ran aground below Cote St Catherine Lock in the Seaway on December 12, 2022 due to engine trouble. All traffic was stopped until the Groupe Ocean tugs Ocean K. Rusby and Ocean Pierre Julien arrived to pull her free in the evening, after which docked at  Baillargeon Pier. Marine Traffic lists the 2019-built vessel, formerly named San, as owned by Polish Shipping Co. (POLSTEAM).

Oh buoy! Runaway research buoy gets data on Great Lakes winter waves

   Winter is a quiet time for Great Lakes research, at least out on the water. Research vessels remain secured to their docks; most monitoring equipment is ashore.
   But last winter, a basketball-sized buoy off Muskegon, Michigan, broke free from its mooring. Set up to track temperature and wave height, it remained out on the lake and collected data scientists have chased for years: real-time measurements of what happens in the open water far from shore.
   It’s some of the first data that exists on how ice and waves collide during the most treacherous season on the Great Lakes.
   “It just aligned perfectly with the kind of work we were trying to do,” said Steve Ruberg, a scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab.
   The spotter buoy drifted about 33 miles, coming close to the center of Lake Michigan. Strong winds pushed it back into an icy area, where it became wedged in thick ice, providing data on how much ice actually dampens strong waves.
   The timing was especially serendipitous because it was a normal ice year. That’s not a given as climate change is driving an overall decline in ice cover mixed with swings from extreme high to low ice years.
   The runaway buoy broke loose in mid-January, drifting about 33 miles and nearing the center of Lake Michigan. Strong winds eventually pushed it back into an icy area south of Grand Haven, where it became wedged in thick ice, providing data on how much ice actually dampens strong waves.

   Direct observations are typically not possible in winter
   For context, winter brings the strongest winds and waves to the Great Lakes. Scientists rely on models to try to understand conditions, but direct observations are scarce. It’s too dangerous on the water; no research vessels can safely operate in winter storms. Search and rescue vehicles are pulled for the season.
   Spotter buoys, like the one that got loose, can withstand the conditions, but they don’t roam freely. There are larger, yellow buoys scattered throughout all five lakes that collect a lot more information. However, they are not as durable and must be brought in before winter.
   A spotter buoy washed ashore north of Ludington, Michigan. The basketball-sized buoys track surface temperature and wave height in the Great Lakes. Last winter, one spotter buoy off Muskegon broke free from its mooring and collected some of the first data scientists have on how ice tamps down winter waves.
   That leaves gaping unknowns: How do waves behave in the middle of the lakes during winter? What happens beneath the ice during winter storms?
   It’s information that could provide better forecasts for commercial freighters operating during those months, if it was available.

   “Our passion here is to try to make that happen,” Ruberg said.
   Scientists can’t glean information about how ice affects waves from the ocean. Lake ice is stronger than ocean ice because saltwater freezes at colder temperatures.
   “There is almost no data, so anything was going to be exciting,” said Ayumi Fujisaki-Manome, a scientist at the Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research who studies hazardous weather and ice on the Great Lakes.

   Enter last year’s rogue buoy.
   The buoy was deployed off Muskegon, Michigan, by NOAA and the Cooperative Institute in late summer 2023, and stayed there until it broke loose.
   When it drifted back from the middle of the lake in early February it floated into a zone of broken, consolidated ice before eventually becoming trapped in solid ice over open water – a perfect gradient illustrating the transition from fractured ice to a solid ice sheet.
   On Feb. 7 and 8, a severe storm hit, drumming up waves more than eight feet high beneath the solid ice.
   What it revealed, Fujisaki-Manome said, was that the models scientists used were dampening waves more than they should. The actual waves under ice cover are much higher than the models predicted.
   Fujisaki-Manome compared how the models performed over open water with their performance in Saginaw Bay, where ice is more stable. There, the models are doing a good job. But out in the middle of Lake Michigan the models need to be improved.
   The rogue buoy eventually washed up on shore north of South Haven on March 25, and a local resident dragged it up on the beach two days later. Ruberg and his team retrieved it in early April.
   Winter is a risky time to be on the water, but advancements in technology – and some creativity – are making it more plausible to collect information on the Great Lakes.
   Researchers, like Hayden Henderson, a scientist at Michigan Technological University, have gone so far as to deploy buoys using a helicopter. Two years ago marked the first time his team placed a larger buoy with more capabilities farther offshore. Last year, they expanded the effort, dropping buoys from helicopters into Lake Superior, northern Lake Huron and northern Lake Michigan.
   The mooring and buoy that was deployed off Muskegon, Michigan, which broke loose last winter. The spotter buoy, which is roughly the size of a basketball, collected some of the first data that exists on how ice and waves collide in the most treacherous season on the Great Lakes.
   “But technology is changing, and we’re making advancements, and I think we’re going to be able to do a better job,” Ruberg said. “But it’s always a challenging time.”
   Ruberg said scientists are hoping underwater robots may eventually help close the winter data gap as well.
   And it’s an important gap to fill, Henderson said, as winter is the fastest changing season in the Great Lakes.
   Better observations lead to more reliable predictions, which is increasingly important as the Great Lakes experience stronger storms, changing water levels and accelerating coastal erosion. Accurately predicting the winter sea state, Henderson said, is essential to understand how coastlines are changing and how to plan for future development.
   “We can’t measure yesterday, but we can start today,” Henderson said.

Coast Guard begins Ice Breaking operations

   SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — U.S. Coast Guard Sector Northern Great Lakes commenced
Operation Taconite at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10, to prevent newly formed ice from hindering
commercial traffic.
   U.S. Coast Guard Cutter SPAR (WLB 206) is assigned to manage the ice breaking needs of western Lake Superior, specifically the twin ports of Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin. As ice coverage expands, U.S. Coast Guard officials will assign additional icebreakers.
   Operation Taconite is the Coast Guard’s largest domestic icebreaking operation. The operation
encompasses Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, the St. Marys River, the Straits of Mackinac and the Georgian Bay.
   Various commercial waterways may close after due consideration is given to the protection of the marine environment, the need for cross-channel traffic such as ferries and the safety of the island residents, who during their daily business use naturally formed ice bridges for transportation to and from the mainland.
   The implementation of Operation Taconite places additional movement criteria on commercial
vessels transiting the area of operation. These measures may include restricting tanker transits to
daylight in the presence of ice, reducing speeds by 2 miles per hour in specified locations to reduce incidental ice breaking, and requiring additional voice and position reporting points throughout the operation’s area of responsibility.
   The Coast Guard recommends all recreational ice users plan their activities carefully, use caution on the ice and stay clear from shipping channels.

1872:  On 11 December 1872, the Port Huron Times listed the following vessels in winter lay-up in Port Huron: Sailing Craft: A H MOSS, FOREST HUNTER. 1895
1895:  On 11 December 1895, GEORGE W. ADAMS (wooden schooner-barge, 231 foot, 1444 gross tons, built in 1875, at Toledo, Ohio) was in tow of the steamer CALEDONIA with a load of coal, bound from Cleveland for Chicago. Her hull was crushed by ice and she sank near Colchester Shoals on Lake Erie. A salvage operation on her the following summer was a failure.

1911
1911:  A fire broke out in a wooden grain elevator at Owen Sound. The KEEWATIN was moored nearby for the winter but not yet locked in ice. The ship was moved to safety but the elevator was destroyed.

1963
1963:  MANCOX went aground in Lake St. Clair, near Peche Island, enroute from Sault Ste. Marie to River Rouge.

1968
1968:  TEXACO CHIEF (Hull#193) was launched December 11, 1968, at Collingwood, Ontario, by Collingwood Shipyards Ltd.

1974
1974:  The H. LEE WHITE collided with the Greek salty GEORGIOS on December 11, 1974, near St. Clair, Michigan, and had to return to Nicholson’s dock at Detroit, Michigan for inspectio

1974:  PERE MARQUETTE 21 passed down the Welland Canal (loaded with the remnants of Port Huron’s Peerless Cement Dock) on December 11, 1974, towed by the tugs SALVAGE MONARCH and DANIEL MC ALLISTER on the way to Sorel, Quebec where she was laid up.

1979
1979:  On December 11, 1979, while about 11 miles off Manitou Island near the Keweenaw Peninsula, the ASHLAND’s engine stalled due to a faulty relay switch. Caught in heavy weather and wallowing in the wave troughs, she put out a distress call. True to Great Lakes tradition, four vessels immediately came to her assistance: two 1,000 footers, LEWIS WILSON FOY and EDWIN H. GOTT, along with WILLIS B. BOYER and U.S.C.G. cutter MESQUITE.

1981
1981:  Upper Lakes Shipping Ltd.’s WHEAT KING was laid up for the last time December 11, 1981.

1984
1984:  The Yugoslavian freighter BEOGRAD, outbound in the Seaway with soybeans for Brazil, collided with the FEDERAL DANUBE at anchor near Montreal and had to be beached. The hull was refloated and arrived at Montreal for repairs on December 27. It was scrapped at Gadani Beach, Pakistan, as b) MURIEL in 1999. FEDERAL DANUBE (i) now operates for Canada Steamship Lines as c) OAKGLEN (iii).

1984:  WILLIAM CLAY FORD loaded her last cargo at Duluth on December 11, 1984.

1998
1998:  The fishing boat LINDA E vanished on Lake Michigan along with its three crewmen on December 11, 1998.

2002
2002:  On 11 December 2002, after last minute dredging operations were completed, Nadro Marine’s tugs SEAHOUND and VAC took the World War II Canadian Naval Tribal-class destroyer H.M.C.S. HAIDA from her mooring place at Toronto’s Ontario Place to Port Weller Dry Docks where a $3.5M refit was started in preparation for the vessel to start her new career as a museum ship in Hamilton, Ontario.

Breaking the Ice: Inside the Soo Locks Ice Mitigation Project

   This past spring, ice caused significant delays at the Soo Locks. One vessel, Interlake’s M/V James R. Barker, was held up for nearly 10 hours. For Great Lakes shipping, those delays ripple across the entire system. That’s why the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has long sought an innovative solution to tackle the problem head-on.
   Interlake’s Vice President of Operations, Paul Christensen, and captains Brad Newland and Mike King recently traveled to Massachusetts with a team of stakeholders, including Mollie Mahoney, who leads the New Lock Project, and several USACE engineers, to offer their navigation expertise and observe this groundbreaking research in action.

   The Challenge
   Every spring, brackish ice flows into the lock chambers, slowing vessel traffic and increasing strain on the system. While it doesn’t damage ships, it forces the locks to cycle more often, adding wear and tear and creating costly delays.
   “We’ve all spent more than our fair share of time stuck in ice—either waiting for someone to get through the lock or being the one trying to make it through,” says Captain Brad Newland.
   “Anything we can do to save time is a win, not just for Interlake but for the entire industry.”
   This comprehensive study includes the entire Soo Locks facility, and the resulting recommendations will benefit both the Poe Lock and the New Lock at the Soo.  According to Mahoney, “including the entire facility in the study allows for implementation of the most efficient and effective ice mitigation solutions. Our focus is on reducing the volume of ice entering the Poe and New Lock, preventing ice from forming in the chambers, and effectively flushing ice that does end up in the chambers.”

Building The Solution
   To find answers, USACE partnered with Arcadis Bergman, working with Verdantas Flow Labs, an engineering firm, and a specialized lab in Holden, Massachusetts, to build a 1:32 scale model of the Soo Locks—complete with 10,000 pounds of synthetic ice that mimics real ice’s buoyancy and movement. They even used a model freighter based on the M/V Paul R. Tregurtha to run tests.
   Captain Mike King was impressed by the scope of the project. “The amount of thought and detail put into this project exceeded anyone’s expectations. Having all these people in one room, striving for the same goal, meant everyone’s input mattered. It was an honor to be involved and exchange information with such a great group of people.”
   Over 40 days of testing, engineers will trial various mitigation strategies, including ice booms and barriers to prevent ice from entering the lock chambers. Before testing began, Great Lakes captains helped verify vessel approach angles and course lines to ensure accuracy.

Why It Matters
   This project is about efficiency and collaboration. By reducing ice-related delays, commerce will continue flowing through the Locks, and critical infrastructure will be protected. The USACE’s willingness to involve industry stakeholders such as Interlake demonstrates its commitment to practical, industry-focused solutions that benefit the entire Great Lakes shipping network.
   “It is always a privilege to work with the Army Corps of Engineers and be a part of making the Soo locks even safer, more reliable, and efficient,” Christensen says.
   Captain Newland adds: “Over the years, some of our suggestions have saved millions of dollars and made meaningful changes that will improve efficiency.”
   He even found a moment of humor during testing: “I got a kick out of watching operators try to maneuver a model of a thousand-foot ship into the lock by hand. The guy was struggling, and I couldn’t resist saying, ‘Now you know what I feel like!’ They were thrilled to see the model behave just like the real ships.”

1891
The CORISANE (2-mast wooden schooner-barge, 137 foot, 292 gross tons, built in 1873, at Marine City, Michigan) was tied up alongside MARY and she also caught fire but the flames were quickly extinguished. She was towed away from MARY by the ferry J C CLARK.

1891:  On 10 December 1891, a fire started on MARY (2-mast wooden schooner, 84 foot, 87 gross tons, built in 1877, at Merriton, Ontario) when an oil stove in the kitchen exploded. The vessel was at anchor at Sarnia, Ontario and damage was estimated at $10,000.

1893
1893:  PERE MARQUETTE 3 ran aground in 1893, north of Milwaukee.

1905
1905:  On December 10, 1905, WILLIAM E. COREY finally was pulled free and refloated after grounding on Gull Island Reef in the Apostle Islands in late November.

1922
1922:  The wooden freighter JAMES DEMPSEY, built in 1883 as a) JIM SHERIFFS, was destroyed by a fire at Manistee, MI.

1942
1942:  The steamer EDWARD Y. TOWNSEND loaded the last cargo of ore for the 1942 season at Marquette.

1950
1950:  Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. of Cleveland, Ohio bought NOTRE DAME VICTORY on December 10, 1950. She would later become b.) CLIFFS VICTORY.

1951
1951:  An explosion occurred in IMPERIAL LEDUC’s, b.) NIPIGON BAY ) forward tanks on December 10, 1951. This happened while her crew was cleaning and butterworthing the tanks. Five crewmembers were injured with one eventually dying in the hospital. Multiple explosions caused extensive damage in excess of $500,000.

1963
1963:  The Canadian coastal freighter SAINTE ADRESSE went on the rocks off Escoumins, QC and was leaking in high winds while on a voyage from Montreal to Sept-Iles. Local residents helped lighter the cargo of beer and ale. The remains of the hull were visible at low water for several years.

1975
1975:  PAUL THAYER went aground in Lake Erie off Pelee Island. It was lightered to WOLVERINE and released Dec. 12 with extensive damage.

1981
1981:  FRANK A. SHERMAN laid up for the last time at Toronto, Ontario on December 10, 1981.

1984
1984:  CEDARGLEN, a.) WILLIAM C. ATWATER, loaded her last cargo at Thunder Bay, Ontario on December 10, 1984, carrying grain for Goderich, Ontario.

1985
1985:  IRVIN L. CLYMER was laid up at Superior, Wisconsin on December 10, 1985, for two seasons before returning to service April 30, 1988.

1986
1986:  PAUL H. CARNAHAN and her former fleet mate, GEORGE M. HUMPHREY, arrived safely under tow at Kaohsiung, Taiwan on December 10, 1986, for scrapping.

1987
1987:  Donated by Cleveland-Cliffs to the Great Lakes Historical Society on December 10, 1987, the WILLIAM G. MATHER was to become a museum ship at Cleveland’s waterfront.

1994
1994:  The Maltese registered YIANNIS Z. entered Chaguaramas, Trinidad and Tobago, in leaking condition after apparently hitting bottom while enroute from Manzanillo, Cuba, to Peru. The ship was arrested for non-payment of the crew. The vessel had been a Seaway trader in 1970 as a) MATIJA GUBEC. The hull was sold at public auction on August 28, 1997, and apparently partially dismantled to become a barge. It was noted sinking at its moorings on October 14, 2006, under the name f) KELLYS MARK and subsequent fate is unknown.

2005
2005:  JOHN D. LEITCH hit bottom above the Eisenhower Lock and began leaking.

Atlantic Huron making last trip before retirement

   After decades of service across the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence, the Canada Steamship Lines self-unloader Atlantic Huron is winding down her final season. Leaving Quebec, she is currently making one last run to Hamilton to load cargo destined for Quebec, her closing voyage in active duty.
   From there, she will head to Nova Scotia to be recycled by R.J. MacIsaac Construction in Sheet Harbour, NS (near Halifax).
   Built in 1984 at Collingwood Shipyards for a reported $35 million, she was launched in October 1983 under her original name, Prairie Harvest, intended to move Prairie grain east through the Seaway. In 1989, she was converted to a self-unloader, marking a new era for the fleet, and she holds a distinction of real significance: she was the last straight-deck bulker ever built for Canada Steamship Lines.

NAVFAC Atlantic Awards $49.7 Million Modification for Heavy-Lift Portal Crane Supporting Shipyard Modernization Efforts

   Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Atlantic has awarded Konecranes Nuclear Equipment and Services LLC of New Berlin, Wisconsin, a $49,673,119 firm-fixed-price modification to previously awarded contract N62470-20-C-0002 for a 175-ton heavy-lift portal crane to be installed at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
   The modification increases the total cumulative value of the contract to $293,839,843.
   Under the contract, Konecranes will design, fabricate, assemble, shop test, deliver, install, inspect, and conduct field testing of the crane, which will feature a portal-type structure with a rotating superstructure, luffing boom, and both main and auxiliary hoists engineered to meet the shipyard’s dimensional and functional requirements. Work will be performed in New Berlin and is expected to be completed by November 2028.
   Fiscal 2026 other procurement (Navy) funds in the amount of $49,673,119 are obligated at the time of award and will not expire at the end of the fiscal year. NAVFAC Atlantic, based in Norfolk, Virginia, is the contracting activity.
   The crane is a major component of the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program (SIOP), a multidecade effort to modernize industrial plant equipment and revitalize critical infrastructure at the Navy’s four public shipyards. The 175-ton crane will provide essential lift capacity to move shop stores, materials, large ship components, radar arrays, antennas, and increasingly heavy propeller shafts—capabilities central to returning submarines and surface ships to the fleet.
   By enabling safer, more efficient heavy-lift operations without the need for tandem cranes or supplemental equipment, the new crane enhances shipyard throughput and strengthens support for the Navy’s nuclear-powered fleet.
   SIOP is delivering integrated modernization across public shipyards to meet evolving maintenance requirements for aircraft carriers and submarines. Since 2018, more than 50 facilities projects valued at nearly $1.5 billion have been completed, including utility upgrades, flood protection systems, and training facilities. More than 300 pieces of industrial plant equipment worth over $700 million have also been delivered, including new high-capacity cranes, precision machining equipment, and advanced fabrication systems.
   More than 40 additional projects, totaling over $6.5 billion, are now under contract—among them the first new dry docks at public shipyards since 1962 and the conversion of a World War II-era dry dock for Gerald R. Ford-class carrier maintenance. These efforts directly support increased maintenance throughput, optimized shipyard configuration, and improved working conditions for the Navy’s 37,000 shipyard personnel.

1871
1871:  On 9 December 1871, CHALLENGE (wooden schooner, 96 foot, 99 tons, built in 1853, at Rochester, New York) missed the piers at Sheboygan, Wisconsin, in heavy weather, stove in some of her planking and sank. She was a particularly sleek craft, actually designed as a yacht and once owned by the U.S. Light House Service as a supply vessel.

1874
1874:  On 9 December 1874, the Port Huron Times reported that “the old railroad ferry steamer UNION at Detroit is having machinery taken out and preparing to go into permanent retirement, or perhaps to serve as a floating dining room for railroad passengers.”

1905
1905:  The FRANK C. BALL, b.) J.R. SENSIBAR in 1930, c.) CONALLISON in 1981) was launched at Ecorse, Michigan by Great Lakes Engineering Works as (Hull #14) on December 9, 1905.

1907
While tied up at Port Colborne, Ontario, waiting to discharge her cargo of grain, a northeast gale caused the water to lower three feet and left the EDWIN H. OHL (steel propeller bulk freighter, 420 foot, 5141 gross tons, built in 1907, at Wyandotte, Michigan) on the bottom with a list of about one foot. The bottom plating was damaged and cost $3,460.19 to repair

1910
1910:  JOHN SHARPLES of the Great Lakes & St. Lawrence Transportation Co., stranded on Galops Island in the St. Lawrence due to low visibility. The vessel was holed fore and aft and not released until April 1911 with the help of the tug HECLA.

1943
1943:  SARNIAN, the first member of what became the Upper Lakes Shipping fleet, stranded on Pointe Isabelle Reef, Lake Superior, while downbound with 162,489 bushels of barley. The vessel was not refloated until July 24, 1944, and never sailed again.

1943:  HILDA MARJANNE was launched December 9, 1943, as a.) GRANDE RONDE (Hull#43) at Portland, Oregon, by Kaiser Co., Inc.

1949
1949:  The keel for Hall Corporation of Canada’s SHIERCLIFFE HALL (Hull#248) was laid on December 9, 1949, at Montreal, Quebec by Canadian Vickers Ltd.

1956
1956:  FORT HENRY, a package freighter for Canada Steamship Lines, hit Canoe Rocks approaching the Canadian Lakehead, cutting open the hull. It reached the dock safely, quickly unloaded, and went to the Port Arthur shipyard for repairs.

1968
1968:  NORTH CAROLINA lost power and sank in Lake Erie five miles west of Fairport, Ohio, in rough weather. The U.S. Coast Guard rescued the three-member crew. The hull went down in about 30 feet of water and is a popular dive attraction.

1973
1975:  Cleveland Tankers’ JUPITER (Hull#227) was christened December 9, 1975, at Jennings, Louisiana, by S.B.A. Shipyards, Inc.

1976
1976:  CLIFFS VICTORY ran aground December 9, 1976 near Johnson’s Point in the ice -laden Munuscong Channel of the St. Marys River.

1977
1977:  JEAN PARISIEN left Quebec City on her maiden voyage December 9, 1977.

1980
1980:  The salt-laden KINGDOC (ii) was released by the tugs POINT VALIANT and IRVING BIRCH after an earlier grounding at Pugwash, NS

1983
1983:  The saltwater ship d) IAPETOS was struck by Iraqi gunners in the Khor Musa Channel about 30-40 miles from Bandar Khomeini, Iran. It was abandoned and struck again by a missile and bombs on March 29, 1984. The vessel began Seaway service as a) JAROSA in 1965 and returned as b) IVORY STAR in 1973 and c) TURICUM in 1975. It was refloated about 1984 and scrapped at Sitalpur, Bangladesh.

1986
1986:  ARTHUR B. HOMER was towed by the tugs THUNDER CAPE, ELMORE M. MISNER and ATOMIC to Port Colborne, Ontario, December 9, 1986, and was scrapped there the following year.

2001
2001:  The former HAND LOONG, a Seaway trader beginning in 1977, sank as b) UNA in the Black Sea off Sinop, Turkey, enroute from Algeria to Romania with 11,000 tons of iron ore. Seventeen sailors were rescued but one was missing and presumed lost.

2003
2003:  STELLAMARE capsized on the Hudson River at Albany, N.Y., while loading turbines. The cargo shifted and three members of the crew were lost. The ship was righted, refloated and repaired as c) NANDALINA S. It was broken up for scrap at Aliaga, Turkey, as d) DOUAA A. in 2011. This heavy-lift freighter first came through the Seaway in 1989 and returned inland from time to time.

2011
2011:  VSL CENTURION lost its stern anchor while downbound in the Welland Canal at Port Colborne. Shipping was held up until it was found. The ship first visited the Seaway as a) SAGITARRIUS in 1990 and became d) PHOENIX SUN in 2012.
