Storm stalls shipping on Great Lakes
A windy low-pressure system has stalled Great Lakes shipping, with many vessels going to anchor. It has also regenerated lake-effect snow squalls, piling on to totals that were measured in feet in some locations over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Gale force winds and 19 foot waves have been reported off Munising, MI. Twelve vessels are sheltered near De Tour and Drummond Island. Eight vessels are sheltered in Whitefish Bay. Two vessels in Keeweenaw Bay. Three vessels sheltered between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island.

MHSD’s Ahoy & Farewell III book
documents 30 years of laker history
Ahoy & Farewell III, the third installment of the Marine Historical Society of Detroit’s long-running series marking the MHSD’s 80th anniversary, is now available. The book documents the vessels we welcomed, and those to which we had to bid farewell, during the last 30 years. This 308-page, hardcover book features many color photos, with multiple images of each vessel referenced.
In a departure from the MHSD’s previous volumes, the nearly 308-page, hardcover book includes color photos, with multiple images of every vessel. The book’s authors are marine historians William Moran and Viktor Kaczkowski, and Know Your Ships publisher Roger LeLievre.
“Putting the book together has been a much greater challenge than any of us had expected,” Kaczkowski said. “With the influx of foreign-built new and used tonnage, writing the histories required a lot more research to ensure the information was correct, particularly due to the wide variety of languages that came into play.”

Lakes Limestone Trade Down 4.9 Percent in November
CLEVELAND — Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled nearly 3 million tons in November, a decrease of 4.9 percent compared to a year ago. Limestone cargos were a mere 8,340 tons below the month’s 5-year average.
Loadings from U.S. quarries decreased 4.5 percent from 2023 to 2.5 million tons. Shipments from Canadian quarries totaled 498,801 tons, a decrease of 7.1 percent.
Year-to-date the limestone trade stands at 27.1 million tons, a decrease of 1.1 percent compared to a year ago. Loadings from Michigan and Ohio quarries were a near match to 2023 at 21.9 million tons, while shipments from Ontario quarries total 5.2 million tons, a decrease of 4.6 percent from 2023.
