Quebec Express first ship to reach the Port of Montreal in 2022

Montreal, QC – Vylona Jessy’s birthday is Jan. 1 and this year her husband, Captain Felino D’Souza of the Quebec Express, plans to gift her with a prize awarded to him by the Montreal Port Authority.

For more than 180 years, the port authority has awarded a gold-headed cane to the first ocean-going vessel of the year to reach the Port of Montreal. The Quebec Express of the Hapag-Lloyd shipping line crossed the port’s downstream limit at Sorel at 12:21 a.m.

D’Souza is the son of a sailor who has worked on the sea for 27 years. He has been a captain for 16 years.

The crew of the Quebec Express spent Christmas together on their 12-day journey from Germany. There were a few storms along the way but “no other unexpected surprises,” according to a Montreal Port Authority statement.
