Tug heads for Sarnia for Mississagi scrap tow
Sault Ste. Marie, ON – The Purvis Marine tug Anglian Lady departed her Sault Ste. Marie, ON, dock Wednesday late afternoon headed for Sarnia. She will return with retired laker Mississagi, bound for the Purvis scrap dock above the locks on the Canadian side.
Thunder Bay grain elevator sets a new record
Thunder Bay, ON – A Thunder Bay grain terminal has established a record for the largest amount of grain loaded onto a single vessel in the history of the port. The new mark was reached Sunday at the G3 Canada elevator on the Mission River, breaking a record set just this summer at another terminal.
Elevator workers put 31,143 metric tons of grain into the holds of the Algoma Central Corporation’s newest bulk carrier, Captain Henry Jackman. In July, the same vessel was loaded with 31,100 metric tons of grain at the nearby Superior elevator.
Carlo Lombardo, general manager of G3 Thunder Bay, says the company has made significant investments in the terminal in the past year, including a recently-completed dredging operation.
He said that without those investments it wouldn’t have been possible to set the record.
“The agriculture industry is an essential service. Since the onset of this pandemic, our guys have never stopped. They realize that it’s absolutely critical for the grain flow to continue from Western Canada through the port of Thunder Bay to domestic and international markets,” Lombardo said.
“At the end of the day, they’re just happy to be part of that network. And this milestone is just the icing on the cake for us.”
Lombardo said it’s particularly rewarding to set a record after working an “unbelievably difficult” 18 months through the pandemic. He also acknowledged that there’s a friendly competition among Thunder Bay’s terminal operators for achievements such as this.
“There’s a little bit of a rivalry going on. It’s a lot of fun.”

NACC Capri and Algosea will head to Portugal for drydocking
NACC Capri and Algosea will transit the Atlantic to Lisnave Shipyard in Setabul, Portugal for drydocking soon. They will leave the last week of October (tentatively Oct. 25). Algosea will sail from Sarnia and NACC Capri from Bath or Port Daniel. Estimated schedule is 11 days to transit and 14 days in drydock.

Crew member falls from Fednav vessel
A crewman from the Fednav vessel Federal Elbe was being lowered by a line from the Federal Elbe in the Welland Canal when he fell to the canal wall Wednesday. He was airlifted to an out-of-region hospital. No further information is available.

Corps’ Virtual Visitor Center series will continue through April
Detroit, MI – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District Park Rangers are continuing their popular Virtual Visitor Center series with monthly programs planned through April 2022.
“We created the Virtual Visitor Center in May 2020 when our facilities closed due to COVID-19 so we could continue our mission to inform, educate and hopefully entertain the public,” said Chief Park Ranger at the Soo Locks, Michelle Briggs. “These programs helped us reach people who may not be able to visit our sites in person and proved so popular that we have continued offering them.”
Briggs notes this year Detroit District Park Ranger workloads increased when Visitor Centers reopened to the public causing them to reassess the previous schedule. “In order to keep up with our daily work and provide high quality educational programing we are offering programs the first Thursday of each month at12:30 p.m. EST during our off season, October-April.”
