Today in Great Lakes History – December 19
1927
1927: On 19 December 1927, ALEXANDRIA (wooden propeller freighter, 97 foot, 201 gross tons, built in 1902, at Chatham, Ontario) burned in the harbor of Little Current, Ontario, off the Government Dock, where her remains still lay.
1942
1942: ASHLAND was launched December 19, 1942, as the L6-S-B1 class bulk carrier a.) CLARENCE B. RANDALL (Hull #523) at Ashtabula, Ohio, by Great Lakes Engineering Works. She laid up for the last time on the same day in 1979.
1950
1950: Because of the increased demand for iron ore during the Korean conflict, more ships were needed and as a consequence the yards on the Great Lakes were operating at capacity. In December 1950, the Republic Steel Corp. bought 70 percent of Nicholson-Universal stock in order to purchase ships from the surplus fleet.
1959
1959: The British freighter ALBANO, which had made three trips through the newly opened Seaway earlier in the year, ran aground at Rethymo, Crete, in heavy weather and was not refloated until December 27. It received extensive hull and engine repairs and was back on the Great Lakes in 1960.
1980
1980: The tanker LAKESHELL (III) went aground at Telegraph Rock, near Parry Sound, due to high winds and ice. The vessel was lightered to IMPERIAL SARNIA and released December 21.
1989
1989: ELMGLEN ran aground December 19, 1989, near Johnson’s Point in the Munuscong Channel of the St. Marys River. Downbound, loaded with grain, she had been diverted to the Munuscong Channel because of difficulties encountered by her fleet mate BEECHGLEN in the ice-clogged West Neebish Channel.
1998
1998: SHURA KOBER first came to the Great Lakes under the flag of the USSR in 1971. The vessel went missing on the Mediterranean north of Cyprus as d) MARELIE after sending out a distress call. It disappeared with all hands.
2000

U.S. shipyard launches first MMSC frigate HMS Saud for Saudi Arabia in Wisconsin.
17 DEC 2025
On December 16, 2025, the Fincantieri Marinette Marine in Wisconsin moved the HMS Saud (820), the first of the four Multi-Mission Surface Combatant (MMSC) frigates ordered by Saudi Arabia, from the construction hall to the ship lift, a new step toward final outfitting and trials. Also known as the Jalalat Al-Malik Saud (His Majesty King Saud), the newly launched ship is part of a four-ship class built as part of Saudi Arabia’s Tuwaiq Project, with Lockheed Martin as prime contractor for combat systems and overall integration.
The Wisconsin ceremony brought together the Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF) Chief of Staff Vice Adm. Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Ghraibi, senior Saudi and U.S. officials, and representatives from the companies involved in the program. Saudi officials tied this event to a broader modernization effort that pairs the four ships with structured crew training, qualification programs, and preparations ashore to ensure the vessels can operate regularly once delivered. The Tuwaiq Project runs from the U.S. approval for an MMSC sale in October 2015 for an estimated overall value of $11.25 billion, while the formal agreement framework was established in May 2017, with the signing of a letter of offer and acceptance (LOA).
This was followed by several major contract awards, including $481 million in March 2018, $450 million in July 2018 for detailed design and planning, and another $282 million in November 2018. On December 20, 2019, a contract modification valued at $1,955,776,266 was issued to cover the detailed design and construction of all four ships, with work spread across Marinette and numerous other U.S. locations and a planned completion date in June 2026. Steel cutting for the first ship took place in October 2019, followed by the keel laying of the HMS Saud in May 2021, which preceded the keel laying for the second ship, the HMS Fahd (pennant number 822), on October 13, 2022. At that stage, fabrication work for the third and fourth ships was already underway.
In 2025, the MMSC-1 was taken out of the construction shed around October 27, 2025. Beyond the ships themselves, Saudi officials emphasize that the Tuwaiq Project also includes shore infrastructure and sustainment measures intended to ensure long-term availability. Planned upgrades at King Abdulaziz Naval Base in Jubail include modern maintenance and training facilities to support the ship’s readiness and reduce reliance on overseas support. In parallel, Saudi authorities link the MMSC program to Vision 2030 objectives through GAMI and GADD, highlighting industrial localization and sustainment capacity as integral parts of the Kingdom’s effort to introduce and sustain a new class of surface combatants.
The Multi-Mission Surface Combatant (MMSC) is based on the U.S. Navy’s Freedom-class littoral combat ship but differs significantly in role and configuration. Instead of relying on interchangeable mission modules, the Saudi version of the LCS is fitted with permanent combat systems and weapons, making it a fully equipped surface combatant. The ship measures around 118 meters in length, sometimes specified as 118.6 meters, with a beam of 17.6 meters, a draft of 4.3 meters, and a maximum displacement of about 3,600 tonnes. Propulsion follows a combined diesel and gas arrangement, allowing speeds of around 30 knots and a range of 5,000 nautical miles, equivalent to about 9,260 kilometers, enabling extended operations beyond Saudi Arabia’s coastal waters. The standard crew is cited as 101 personnel, broken out as 84 core crew plus 17 for the helicopter detachment, with space available for 29 additional embarked personnel when required.
For this class of ship, helicopters and drones will be used to extend what the vessel could see, track, and engage. Therefore, the HMS King Saud includes a flight deck and hangar sized for an MH-60R Seahawk helicopter, deployed for anti-submarine warfare through dipping sonar, sonobuoys, and torpedoes, for surface surveillance with radar and electro-optical sensors, and for utility missions such as transport, medical evacuation, and vertical replenishment. Because the MH-60R can search large sea areas much faster than the ship, it allows the combat system to detect and classify contacts at long range and cue the ship’s weapons or other assets if needed. Shipborne drones, typically vertical takeoff and landing systems, are also going to be used to monitor surface traffic, identify contacts of interest, and help commanders build a clearer picture of the surrounding environment without committing a helicopter for every task.
The combat system of the HMS Saud is built around Lockheed Martin’s COMBATSS-21 combat management system, derived from the Aegis system and connected through Link 16 communications to coordinate sensors, track management, and weapon control. Sensors include the Hensoldt TRS-4D active electronically scanned array radar, two Saab CEROS 200 fire control directors, identification systems, electronic support measures such as the WBR-2000, and anti-submarine systems such as a variable depth sonar, with Captas VDS also referenced. Weapons listed for the class include Harpoon Block II anti-ship missiles and a Mk 41 vertical launch system intended to support Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles, with multiple descriptions referring to two 8-cell Mk 41 VLS per ship. A broader weapon fit cited includes an 11-round Mk 15 Mod 31 SeaRAM, a BAE Systems 57 mm gun, two Nexter Narwhal 20 mm remote weapon stations, and Mk 32 torpedo launchers, plus decoy and torpedo-defense systems such as ALEX SKWS and AN-SLQ-25. Moreover, an equipment line associated with the program cites 532 tactical RIM-162 ESSM rounds across installed, test and training, and spares.

Today in Great Lakes History – December 18
1899
1899: On 18 December 1899,Henry Cort 115 (steel whaleback barge, 256 foot, 1,169 gross tons, built in 1891, at Superior, Wisconsin) was carrying iron ore in a storm on Lake Huron when she broke from her tow steamer well out in the lake. She went ashore five days later at Pic Island off Thunder Bay, Ontario, and broke up. Her crew was thought to be lost, but they showed up days later after a long trek through the wilderness.
1909
1909: The Goodrich Transit Co.’s ALABAMA (Hull#36) was launched in 1909, at Manitowoc, Wisconsin, by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co. Reduced to a barge in 1961.
1909: Ice punctured the hull of the F.A. MEYER, formerly the J. EMORY OWEN, on Lake Erie while enroute from Boyne City, Michigan, to Buffalo with a cargo of lumber. The crew was rescued by the sailors aboard MAPLETON.
1915
1915: The canaller PRINCE RUPERT, requisitioned for World War 1 service, was lost at sea enroute from Newport News, Virginia, to Trinidad with a cargo of coal. It foundered P: 34.40 N / 74.45 W.
1921
1921: In 1921, 94 vessels were laid up at Buffalo with storage grain when a winter gale struck. The 96 mile-per-hour winds swept 21 vessels ashore and damaged 29 others. Three weeks were required to restore order to the Buffalo waterfront.
1921: On December 18, 1921, gale force winds drove the CARMI A. THOMPSON ashore at Buffalo, New York where she was laid up with grain for winter storage. She ended up wedged between the LOUIS W. HILL and the MERTON E. FARR. The THOMPSON was released on January 5, 1922, but required the replacement of 156 hull plates before her return to service.
1932
1932: A fire in the coal bunker of the BROWN BEAVER, laid up at Toronto with a winter storage cargo of wheat, brought the Toronto Fire Department to extinguish the blaze.
1947
1947: The tug EMERSON was Hull 5 at the Collingwood shipyard and completed in 1903. The ship stranded at Punta Sardegna, in the Maddalena Archipelago, as f) GIULIANOVA. The hull broke in two January 8, 1948, and sank.
1950
1950: The tug SACHEM sank in Lake Erie and all 12 on board were lost. The hull was later located, upright on the bottom. It was refloated October 22, 1951, reconditioned and returned to service. The ship became c) DEREK E. in 1990.
1953
1953: Canada Steamship lines GEORGIAN BAY (Hull#149) was launched during a snowstorm on December 18, 1953, at Collingwood, Ontario by Collingwood Shipyards Ltd.
1956
1956: The tug AMERICA freed the ore carrier IRVING S. OLDS in 1956, after the OLDS grounded entering the River Raisin from Lake Erie. The OLDS stuck at a 45-degree angle to the channel, while entering for winter lay up.
1959
1959: On 18 December 1959, BRIDGEBUILDER X (propeller tug, 71 foot, 46 gross tons, built in 1911, at Lorain, Ohio) foundered in a storm while enroute from Sturgeon Bay to N. Fox Island on Lake Michigan. Two lives were lost. She had been built as the fish tug PITTSBURG. In 1939, she was converted to the excursion boat BIDE-A-WEE. Then she was converted to a construction tug for the building of the Mackinac Bridge and finally she was rebuilt in 1958, as a logging tug.
1962
1962: RIDGEFIELD, a Liberty ship that visited the Great Lakes in 1961 and 1962, ran aground at the east end of Grand Cayman Island in ballast on a voyage from Maracaibo, Venezuela, to the U.S. Gulf Coast. The hull was never removed and visible for years.
1968
1968: The Canadian Coast Guard vessel GRENVILLE was trapped in an ice flow and rammed against the St. Louis Bridge along the Seaway. The crew was removed safely by stepping on to the bridge before the ship sank. It had been retrieving buoys. The hull received considerable ice damage over the winter but was refloated in June 1969, towed to Sorel and scrapped.
1975
1975: TECUN UMAN visited the Seaway in 1969. It disappeared without a trace in heavy seas 250 miles east of Savannah, Georgia, enroute from Mobile, Alabama, to Port Cartier, Quebec, as b) IMBROS. All 22 on board were lost.
1979
1979: Canada Steamship Lines NANTICOKE (Hull#218) was launched December 18, 1979, at Collingwood, Ontario by Collingwood Shipyards Ltd. Retired in 2020 as SALARIUM.
1981
1981: JOHN T. HUTCHINSON was laid up for the last time December 18, 1981, at Cleveland, Ohio.
1985
1985: FEDERAL ST. LAURENT (ii) collided with the Mercier Bridge in the Seaway with minor damage to both the ship and the structure. The vessel was scrapped at Chittagong, Bangladesh, as c) DORA in 2003.
1989
1989: The 425-foot Finnish tanker KIISLA ran aground while transiting the North Entrance of Buffalo Harbor on the 29th of December 1989. The ship was inbound with xylene for the Noco Product Terminal in Tonawanda when it strayed from the navigation channel due to reduced visibility from heavy snow squalls and grounded near the #1 green buoy of the Black Rock Canal. She was towed off the rocks by tugboats from Buffalo and then tied up at the Burnette Trucking Dock (formerly the Penn Dixie Dock) on the Buffalo River for Coast Guard inspection. A diver found a 47-inch by 5-inch crack below the waterline at the #1 ballast tank, with a large rock firmly wedged in the outer hull plating, but with no damage to the inner hull or cargo tanks. The ship was cleared to head back to Sarnia to off-load her cargo before repairs could be made.

Today in Great Lakes History – December 17
1875
1875: On 17 December 1875, the steamboat JENNISON of Captain Ganoe’s line, which ran between Grand Rapids and Grand Haven, burned at Grand Rapids. She was laid up for the winter just below the city on the Grand River. She was insured for $12,000.
1905
1905: The Anchor Line steamer JUNIATA was launched at the yards of the American Shipbuilding Company in Cleveland, Ohio. The JUNIATA was the first large passenger boat built in Cleveland since the NORTH LAND and NORTH WEST. Today the JUNIATA exists as the National Historic Landmark MILWAUKEE CLIPPER in Muskegon, Mich.
1910
1910: C.L. AUSTIN was launched December 17, 1910, as a.) WILLIS L. KING (Hull#79) at Ecorse, Mich., by Great Lakes Engineering Works.
1917
1917: While breaking ice off Colchester Reef, Lake Erie on 17 December 1917, the HENRY CORT (steel propeller whaleback bulk freighter, 320 foot, 2,234 gross tons, built in 1892, at W. Superior, Wis., formerly a.) PILLSBURY) was in a collision with the MIDVALE (steel propeller bulk freighter, 580 foot, 8,271 gross tons, built in 1917, at Ashtabula, Ohio). The PILLSBURY sank in thirty feet of water 4 1/2 miles from Colchester Reef. Her crew walked across the ice to the MIDVALE. The wreck was located on 24 April 1918, four miles from its original position, with seven feet of water over her and raised later that year to be repaired.
1955
1955: On December 17, 1955, in heavy fog, the B.F. AFFLECK collided head-on with her fleetmate HENRY PHIPPS in the Straits of Mackinac. Both vessels were damaged but were able to sail under their own power for repairs.
1957
1957: The Great Lakes-built LAKE HEMLOCK foundered in Long Island Sound.
1961
1961: Paterson’s NEW QUEDOC sank at her winter moorings at Midland, Ont., on December 17, 1961, with a load of storage grain. The sinking was caused by the automatic sea valves that were accidentally opened.
1964
1964: The former T-2 tanker GOOD HOPE, operating as a bulk carrier, ran aground in a blizzard at Ulak Island, in the Aleutians, as d) SAN PATRICK. The ship had loaded wheat and cattle feed at Vancouver for Yokohama, Japan, and all on board perished. It had been a Seaway trader in 1962.
1972
1972: THOMAS SCHULTE began Great Lakes trading in 1957 and returned through the Seaway in 1959. It was sailing as c) CAPE SABLE when it sank with the loss of 13 lives in a gale 100 miles west of La Corunna, Spain. The vessel was enroute from Antwerp, Belgium, to Algiers, Algeria, with general cargo when it went down.
1977
1977: STADACONA (iii) went aground after clearing the Manitoulin Island community of Little Current with a cargo of ore pellets. The ship was stuck for several days.
1981
1981: The ROGERS CITY was laid up for the last time at Calcite, Mich., on December 17, 1981.
1985
1985: With an inexperienced Taiwanese crew, boiler problems and the collapse of Lock 7’s west wall in the Welland Canal, the departure of SAVIC (CLIFFS VICTORY) was delayed until December 17, 1985, when she departed Chicago, Illinois, under her own power.

Presque Isle back in service after shipyard stay
After an extensive stay at Erie, PA, the ITB Presque Isle departed Donjon shipyard Monday morning heading to Superior, WI to load.
The 1,000-foot tug/barge, operated by Great Lakes Fleet, Duluth, MN, was heading upbound on the southeast side of Neebish Island on the St. Marys River on the evening of August 5 when it had maneuverability issues, likely caused by a dropped rudder on southern Lake Michigan, causing it to briefly run aground on the Canadian side of the river before freeing itself. Presque Isle lost four starboard propeller blades during the incident, all of which were recovered and reinstalled, as was the rudder.
144-year-old Door County shipwreck named a Wisconsin historic place
The wooden schooner was carrying lumber and bark when it capsized in Death’s Door in 1881, then sank in 105 feet of water near Chambers Island while being towed.
A 144-year-old shipwreck laying more than 100 feet under the bay of Green Bay near Chambers Island is Door County’s most recent addition to the Wisconsin State Register of Historic Places.
The wreck of the cargo schooner Jennibel, about 9 miles west of Fish Creek, recently was named to the state historic place register, the Wisconsin Historical Society announced in a Dec. 11 news release. It’s the 33rd shipwreck in waters off Door County named to the state register but the first in about a year, since the Little Harbor Launch northeast of Sturgeon Bay joined the list in December 2024.
The shipwreck is historically significant because it’s an early wooden schooner that worked in Wisconsin waters, providing maritime historians and archaeologists an opportunity to study wooden schooner construction of the time and how such vessels were used in other bulk cargo trades, the historical society’s news release said. Much of the remains are intact, too.
The Jennibel was a two-masted, 95-foot-long wooden schooner built in 1863 at the Stoakes & Locklin shipyard in Sheboygan. Its 18-year career was spent mostly hauling lumber, as well as some bulk cargo, between ports in Door County and ports along the Lake Michigan shore. As with many other cargo ships of the era, the Jennibel experienced occasional groundings and collisions, but repairs didn’t alter the ship’s lines or dimensions, the historical society said in its news release.
The last voyage of the Jennibel began the morning of Sept. 17, 1881, when it departed Egg Harbor with a load of green lumber and tanning bark, bound for Milwaukee. It was sailing through the Death’s Door Passage off Washington Island when a sudden gale struck from the south and capsized the ship.
Fortunately for the crew of the Jennibel, the tug John Gregory, owned by George Spear of Sturgeon Bay, was working nearby. Its captain saw the Jennibel sinking and came to its aid, taking the crew aboard and then attempting to tow the vessel toward Sturgeon Bay.
But, according to the Wisconsin Shipwrecks website, the weather again turned bad as the ships were southwest of Chambers Island and the Jennibel sank. The Gregory marked the tow line with a buoy and sought shelter until the weather calmed, but when the tug returned to refloat the Jennibel, the line broke and the Jennibel settled to the bottom of the bay in about 100 feet of water. Further salvage attempts were made but proved unsuccessful, and eventually the vessel was abandoned. At the time of its loss it was valued at $2,500.
The remains of the Jennibel sit in about 105 feet of water southwest of Chambers Island, just on the Wisconsin side of the border with Michigan and halfway between Fish Creek on one side of the bay and Marinette on the other. The wreck sits upright with the hull intact except for the transom, which was broken in one of the salvage operations. Many of the ship’s hull components also remain intact, and many more remain hidden within the hull or are scattered about the site.
State and federal laws protect the wreck of the Jennibel. Divers may not remove artifacts or structure when visiting this site. Removing, defacing, displacing or destroying artifacts or sites is a crime. For more information on the Jennibel and other shipwrecks in Wisconsin waters, visit wisconsinshipwrecks.org.
