CCGS Griffon was built in 1970 by Davie Shipbuilding in Lauzon, Quebec, entering service as the last of of the first group of diesel-electric vessels in the Canadian Coast Guard.

Officially classified as a “high-endurance multi-tasked vessel,” the Griffon performs icebreaking duties in the winter months, primarily in eastern Lake Ontario and along the Seaway down to Montreal, and serves as a buoy tender and search & rescue vessel in the warmer months.
