CCGS Helen Irene Battle

Built in 2018 by Kanter Marine in St. Thomas, Ontario, CCGS Helen Irene Battle is one of two Channel Survey & Sounding Vessels built for the purpose of conducting hydrographic surveys. The catamaran-style vessels feature state-of-the-art technology including multi-beam sonar, positioning systems, and data acquisition and processing systems.

They can also assist with activities related to search and rescue, aids to navigation, law enforcement and emergency response, natural disasters, and other scientific missions.

This vessel honors award-winning scientist Helen Irene Battle, who was the first woman in Canada to earn a PhD in Marine Biology (1928). She also co-founded the Canadian Society of Zoologists and served as its president from 1962-1963.
