CCGS Martha L. Black
The first of its namesake class of vessels, the CCGS Martha L. Black was built in 1986 by Versatile Pacific Shipyards in North Vancouver, British Columbia. Designed as a “high-endurance, multi-tasked vessel,” the Martha L. Black operates mainly along the St. Lawrence River and Seaway as a buoy tender and ice breaker.
The vessel was named after Martha L. Black, a Chicago native who immigrated to Canada and became a pioneering settler of Yukon as well as the second woman to be elected a Member of Parliament.
