CCGS Pierre Radisson

Canadian Coast Guard

The first of its namesake class of medium-duty ice breakers, the CCGS Pierre Radisson was built in 1978 by Burrard Dry Dock Co. Ltd. in North Vancouver, BC.

Stationed at CCGS Base Quebec in Quebec City, the Pierre Radisson spends the winter performing icebreaking duties from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, up the St. Lawrence and Saguenay Rivers, through the St. Lawrence Seaway, and into the Great lakes. During the summer months, the vessel escorts ships, maintains navigation aids, and performs search and rescue operations in the Canadian Arctic.

The vessel is named after 17th century French fur trader and explorer Pierre-Esprit Radisson.
