A significant winter storm has developed over the region and gale / storm warnings have been issued Tuesday and Wednesday for most of Lake Superior. With winds from the north to the NE several vessels are sailing the northern route. Joseph L Block for Two Harbors has anchored in Ashburton Bay on the west side of the Neys Peninsula. Whitefish Bay had been scheduled for Superior but diverted to Thunder Bay on Monday afternoon arriving at Keefer Terminal at 20:54 to wait out the weather. Tuesday; 7:46 Laura L Van Enkevort / Joseph H Thompson bound for Two Harbors arrived in Thunder Bay and went to anchor. Harvest Spirit departed Thunder Bay at 14:49 and is now anchored on the west side of Porphyry Island. 20:45 Algoma Equinox for Superior is going to anchor in Thunder Bay.
Duluth-Superior – Scott Bjorklund
Duluth Entry: Lee A. Tregurtha arrived at 06:55 (CST) Tuesday morning to wait for the Michipicoten to finish loading at BNSF. Indiana Harbor arrived at 12:31 to load low sulfur coal at SMET. Algoma Innovator arrived at 21:40 to unload salt at Compass Minerals. As of Tuesday night, Algoma Innovator was unloading at Compass Minerals, John G. Munson was loading under the CN#6 shiploader, Arthur M. Anderson was waiting further down the CN dock for weather, and James R. Barker was waiting out the weather at Husky Fuel. Due to the weather, it is hard to say when departures and arrivals will take place.
Superior Entry: American Mariner departed at 04:36 (CST) Tuesday morning with iron ore pellets for Sault Ste. Marie. Michipicoten arrived at 05:00 to load at BNSF. Finally, Burns Harbor arrived at 07:14 for winter lay-up at Elevator M; this is the first winter lay-up arrival for the port. As of Tuesday night, Lee A. Tregurtha was loading at BNSF, Michipicoten was waiting out the weather at Lakehead Pipeline, and Indiana Harbor was loading at SMET. Again, due to the weather it is hard to say when departures and arrivals will take place.
Two Harbors-Silver Bay – Gary A. Putney
The Great Republic arrived Two Harbors on 01/03 after having been anchored near Cornucopia, WI. She arrived Two Harbors on 01/03 at 18:00. At 08:04 until 08:22 on 01/04 she shifted to North of #2 where she still sits at 19:00 where I assume she’s waiting out weather. Due Two Harbors on 01/05 are the Joseph L. Block and the American Century. The Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H. Thompson had been scheduled for Two Harbors, but is now showing a Duluth destination. At 19:00 on 01/04 she is currently anchored in Thunder Bay. Arriving Northshore Mining in Silver Bay on 01/04 at,08:50 was the Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader.
Thunder Bay, ON
Monday; 16:18 Capt. Henry Jackman from the Richardson Main Terminal to Viterra A to finish loading grain. 14:49 Harvest Spirit departed along the north shore downbound.
Marquette, MI – Arthur Pickering
Jan 4th: Happy New Year everyone! Well with the end of the shipping season just a few days away, traffic in and out of Marquette is increasing in effort to get the last few loads out before the season ends. The next scheduled vessel will be the Manitowoc arriving Wednesday afternoon pending weather conditions. The Kaye Barker is scheduled for a Thursday evening arrival while the Herbert Jackson and the Sam Laud are scheduled for Saturday morning arrivals.
Milwaukee, WI – Jeremy Whitman
The Sam Laud spent most of the day at Milwaukee’s Heavy Lift Dock after arriving yesterday evening from Waukegan. Shortly after 5PM the Laud shifted to the LaFarge dock for unknown reasons.
Northern Lake Huron
Alpena: Monday; 18:29 Samuel De Champlain / Innovation departed for Green Bay.
Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Algoma Intrepid arrived at 09:30 Tuesday morning and began loading at Compass Minerals. Algoma Buffalo and Algoma Sault were stored along the North wall in the basin.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Sandusky: Saginaw departed for Detroit at 13:41. John J. Boland is loading at Norfolk Southern and H. Lee White moved in behind the Boland. Victory/Maumee and Kaye E. Barker are anchored. Robert S. Pierson is the 8th boat to arrive to load coal this week, anchoring at 21:30.
Cleveland: G.L. Ostrander/Integrity left late Monday night for Detroit. Sharon MI/Huron Spirit arrived at 00:37 and went to dock 24N at the Port to unload steel coils. After unloading, she left for Sault Ste. Marie at 15:45. New York/Double Skin 509A went to Marathon to unload. American Courage departed for Ashtabula at 14:07.
Ashtabula: American Courage arrived from Cleveland late Tuesday night.
Nanticoke: Calumet arrived to unload at Stelco at 15:08. Algoma Hansa went the Port Dover anchorage at 16:58. Algosea is due on Wednesday.
