The GRIFFON got going again on the morning of the 31st to open up the North Entrance Channel for the departure of the AMERICAN MARINER and SUNNANVIK from Buffalo. The MARINER backed out first around 10AM and promptly got stuck while winding in the Outer Harbor off the Erie Basin. They called a tug and the OKLAHOMA came out to help. She worked all afternoon to get the big freighter turned around with little success. The Captain of the SUNNANVIK was made aware of the sticky situation and decided to wait at the Holcim terminal even though they were ready to go by 2PM. Around 4:45PM the Captain on the GRIFFON was ordered to stand by in the lake by his command. They decided to hold off because of the fear of flushing more ice into the harbor and having it make matters worse for the MARINER considering they were already too close to the breakwalls. The OKLAHOMA finally gave up around 7:30PM and she headed back in, leaving the MARINER beset in the ice for the night. While all this was going on, the SUNNANVIK had tried to depart from Holcim that evening and made it as far down as the BIDCO yard when the Coast Guard in Buffalo called on the radio. They then told the Captain to stop his departure and go back to the dock so they did. Their main concern was not to have two stuck freighters instead of one, especially with dark about to set in. The GRIFFON then went back out to the Safe Water Beacon and hove to for the night.

  April Fools Day lived up to it’s reputation when the tug OKLAHOMA had some sort of mechanical problem and couldn’t go out and try to help the AMERICAN MARINER again. The good news was that the GRIFFON came in and made a run around the stuck freighter, finally freeing her of ice. The two of them got going out the North Entrance Channel around 2PM that afternoon headed West through the ice field off Buffalo. After reaching open waters, the MARINER continued on her way while the GRIFFON turned right around and headed back to Buffalo to do more work.
