April Fools Day lived up to it’s reputation when the tug OKLAHOMA had some sort of mechanical problem and couldn’t go out and try to help the AMERICAN MARINER again. The good news was that the wind shifted the ice around just enough during the afternoon that the MARINER was finally able to make her turn and get underway. She departed through the North Entrance and met the GRIFFON out in the lake. The two of them got going around 2PM and headed West through the ice field off Buffalo. After reaching open waters out near CIP 16, the MARINER continued on her way while the GRIFFON turned around and headed back down the track they just cut. She arrived at the Safe Water Beacon around 6:30PM and dropped the hooks for the night just over the Canadian side of the border line. While all that was going on, the MANITOULIN had anchored  out in the lake to wait for the MARINER to clear up and the SUNNANVIK to depart from Holcim so she could head in for the ADM Standard elevator. MANITOULIN had come here from Toledo with the 2nd half of a split load of Canadian Red Wheat out of Thunder Bay.

  Around 7AM on the 2nd of April, the SUNNANVIK backed out for the lake and departed with the OKLAHOMA on hand for the assist. After clearing the breakwall, the GRIFFON took over and escorted her out to open waters near CIP 16. Once she was in the clean, SUNNANVIK departed all on her own, bound for the Welland Canal and the loading dock at Bath, Ont. The GRIFFON then headed back to escort the MANITOULIN in while the OKLAHOMA waited in the Outer Harbor. MANITOULIN got stuck for a little bit in the North Entrance Channel but the GRIFFON quickly got her out of it and back underway. The OKLAHOMA spent this time breaking ice around the area where the MANITOULIN would wind in the Outer Harbor. They then made up the tow and the big grain boat was taken up the Buffalo River stern first for the ADM Standard Elevator. The GRIFFON departed for Port Colborne to refuel and resupply and let the crew have a break.
