The large tug-barge combo JOYCE L. VANENKEVORT – GREAT LAKES TRADER arrived from Brevort with sand for CSI on the afternoon of 1st of August. They went up unassisted and arrived off the CSI landing around 4:30PM for unloading.
The sand coming off the TRADER was super sticky so it took a record 22 hours to unload her at CSI. They finally got done at 2PM on the 2nd and the tug JOYCE took her big barge out to the lake stern first. There was a lot of pleasure boat traffic in the river and Outer Harbor so the Captain decided to keep backing all the way outside the breakwall. They winded on the thrusters in open water and then departed for Marblehead, OH.
The two large tugs, MEREDITH ASHTON and FISCHER HAYDEN brought a big derrick boat called the JUSTIN AVERY and a deck barge named the U-794 to Lackawanna in a combined tow on the 3rd. The MEREDITH is an upper pilothouse style tug with twin engines and 4,000HP so she led the way from Loraine, OH to just outside the South Entrance. They arrived around 11AM, stopped out in the lake, rearranged the tow to push mode, and then proceeded in. Both tugs stopped again in the deeper water of the Outer Harbor off the Gateway Metroport piers so that the smaller tug DULUTH could come take over. DULUTH moved the barge 53 from the Gateway side of the Union Ship Canal to the CRH cement side, about as far up the slip as they could go. She then backed out and headed for the AVERY. The bigger tugs stood by as the DULUTH brought the big derrick boat in and docked her on the Gateway side where the 53 had been loaded with stone. After being released, the MEREDITH and the FISCHER both departed for Port Colborne later that afternoon.
The ALGOMA INNOVATOR arrived with salt from Goderich for the bulk pile at Gateway Metroport at 2AM on the 5th. She wrapped up her unload, dropped limes, and backed out for the harbor at 2PM. After winding off the CRH terminal, the INNOVATOR departed for Goderich to load more salt. Around 6PM the tug MEREDITH ASHTON came back to Buffalo for some unknown reason. She arrived at the Gateway Metroport Main Dock and stopped at the North end, just inside the Lackawanna Canal for about an hour or so. Once whatever it was that they were doing there was done, she departed for Muskegon, MI.
The SUNNANVIK arrived at 8:40AM on the 7th for the Ganson St. Holcim terminal. This was one of the last runs for her in the ship’s year and half career on the lakes. The brand new cement carrier TAMARACK departed the Netherlands during early August, bound for Montreal and her new life trading under contract to Holcim. SUNNANVIK will eventually head back out to the ocean trades where she came from in early 2024.
