The BRISTOL BAY arrived off Buffalo to help the MANITOULIN at 2:30PM on the 23rd. She spent the afternoon running up and down the North Entrance Channel from the Safe Water Beacon to the harbor and back, trying to open up the ice field enough to get the big freighter moving. Not much progress was made before dark and the BRISTOL BAY hove to out in the lake, just ahead of the beset laker. The crew took a break with the intention to re-start ice breaking in the morning.
