The AMERICAN MARINER was the first boat of May when she arrived for the Frontier elevator on the 2nd at 3PM. She came in without tugs and went right up on her own to General Mills on a hazy afternoon.

  Grain unloading at the Frontier was all done on the evening of the 4th and the MARINER backed herself out for the lake at 7PM.

  Next in was the MANITOULIN on the 5th with a load of wheat out of Thunder Bay at 4PM on the 5th for the Standard elevator. She was winded off the Coast Guard Base with the help of the VERMONT and towed up stern first as the NYSPA tugs scooted by ahead of them. The BREAKER & JON CARIE were taking a section of the Niagara River Ice Boom up to the storage site at Katherine St.  

 MANITOULIN was all set at the Standard by the evening of the 6th and the ship got underway at 8:30PM without tug assistance. She crawled her way down the river and cleared the Buffalo piers about an hour and half later, bound for Sandusky.

  SUNNANVIK came in at 2:45PM on the 12th with a load of cement from Bath for Holcim. She was docked and unloading at the Ganson St. elevator for about 14 hours before departing the next morning by herself. Speaking of cement terminals, Holcim announced that their American locations will all be re-branded to their new spin off division called “Amrize” later this year. They decided to make a move like this for legal purposes with government regulators and to free up the business from their international holdings. New signage will be forthcoming at the Buffalo terminal to replace the signs they just hung up last year. In more Holcim news, their veteran steamer ALPENA suffered an engineering plant failure in mid-May that sent her to the repair yard for an undisclosed amount of time. Apparently, turbine blade damage was found causing some extensive and costly work to be done. To replace her lost tonnage, Holcim contracted with Dann Marine Towing. They sent in their cement hauling tug – barge unit TREASURE COAST – CEMENT TRANSPORTER 7700 to head up the lakes and start delivering loads for the ALPENA. This barge is 340-feet long by 64 feet in beam and carries 7,300 tons of cement.

  The USCG cutter MACKINAW was here on the 14th replacing buoys out in the lake. She arrived around 9AM, worked all day, and departed West at 6PM. Later that night the 840-foot ATB JOYCE L VANENKEVORT arrived with sand for CSI and came right in without tugs at 10PM. The sand came off relatively quick this time and they were all set to depart by 12Noon the next day. The tug JOYCE backed her barge down to the Outer Harbor and winded off the Erie Basin before departing for Marblehead.

  I noticed that ADM must have gotten all their approvals from the city to proceed with the planned improvements to the former Great Northern site. They had construction underway during mid-May with crews leveling out the area where the elevator once stood. Stone was used to infill the depression where the building’s foundations had been removed. This brought the ground level up to meet the surrounding lot. They were also installing new drainage separation tanks, steel sheet pile retaining walls along the canal, stone barriers in the parking lot, and a new truck driveway was being paved. This improvement will help streamline the trucking of grain over from the Standard elevator and give them more room to park trailers when not in use. Eventually they also intend to construct a new unloading shed for the lofting leg attached to the flour mill after the exterior lot is finished.   

  SUNNANVIK arrived from Port Colborne at 5PM on the dark, cold afternoon of May 18th. She came in by herself and cruised right on up to Holcim to unload a cargo of cement from Bath. Later that night the MARK W BARKER came in with a load of sand for CSI from Brevort. She did not need any tugs and went up the river to the City Ship Canal using her thrusters.

 The ocean going freighter ANNETTE A DESGAGNES arrived from the Port Colborne Anchorage at 6AM on the 19th with a load of windmill parts from South Korea for the Gateway Metroport in Lackawanna. She was met at the South Entrance by the tug VERMONT and winded off the Ash Grove cement terminal. They docked her stern first along the dimensional unloading apron at the North end of the Main Dock. Later that morning, SUNNANVIK departed Holcim cement at 9AM without tugs and backed down to the Outer Harbor. She winded off the Erie Basin with the thrusters and headed for Port Colborne. About two hours later, the MARK W. BARKER backed down from CSI and also winded off the Erie Basin using her thrusters. After departing Buffalo, she headed up the lake to load salt at Cargil in Cleveland. 

  The DESGAGNES was finally done unloading windmill parts in Lackawanna and departed Gateway Metroport with the VERMONT at 7AM on the 24th of May. They dropped the tow line in the South Entrance and the small ocean freighter took off on her own for the Port Colborne Anchorage on a rainy, cool, and dark Lake Erie.

  It was pretty quiet for about a week in later May until the NEW YORK – DS509A tug-barge combo arrived on the night of the 29th around 11PM. They went to anchorage out in the lake off the breakwall to wait for the next morning before heading in.

 Around 7AM on the 30th, the NEW YORK started pushing her big asphalt barge ahead for the North Entrance. They met the tug VERMONT at the Erie Basin and proceeded down to the Black Rock Lock. Special arrangements had been made ahead of time and a contractor drilling barge was previously moved out of the lock so the NEW YORK could proceed down to Tonawanda. After locking through the VERMONT continued to escort them to the Suite Kote pier. They winded the barge together and were secure for unloading around 10AM.

 Another load of windmills showed up on May 30th. The ROSAIRE A. DESGAGNES arrived from the Welland Canal with more of them at 5PM and met the tug VERMONT at the South Entrance. This time, the ship was not winded and instead, they came straight in for Gateway Metroport. A steady breeze off the lake set them down towards the East so the tug gave them “Half Bells” on the Port Side amidships to line up for a run through the piers and into the Lackawanna Canal. Once they had her alongside the pier at the North end of the Main Dock, the tug was released and the ship secured for about a five day unload.
