BUFFALO,NEW YORK [USBUF]-Brian Wroblewski
The “SUNNY” backed herself out of Buffalo at 6AM on the warm and muggy morning of August 8th, bound for Bath, Ontario to load more cement for Cleveland.
The 740-foot ALGOMA INTREPID arrived with a load of salt for the bulk pile at Gateway Metroport. As she passed through the South Entrance, the tug DULUTH departed the Union Slip with another hopper barge full of stone for Dunkirk. They scooted out behind the INTREPID as she maneuvered into the Lackawanna Canal. After the DULUTH cleared up, the ALGOMA INTREPID pushed ahead and tied up at the middle section of the Main Dock by the open apron to unload overnight.
The INTREPID was all done at Gateway on the morning of the 16th and backed out on her own at 8:30AM. She winded on the thrusters off the CRH terminal and departed the South Entrance bound for Thunder Bay about a half hour later.
The Summer Slump wore on through August and traffic was down for a few weeks. Finally, on the 23rd, the tug NEW YORK showed up with her barge DS509A on a wire behind her at 8:30PM. She stopped on the North side of the North Entrance Channel and switched into the barge’s notch for the night. They dropped anchor out there and sat in the lake until the Black Rock Lock opened the next morning.
The NEW YORK picked up the hooks and came in for the Suite Kote dock in Tonawanda at 7AM on the 24th with assistance from the VERMONT. They were all secure at the wharf for unloading asphalt around 9:30AM
SUNNANVIK came back with more cement from Bath for Holcim at 12:30AM on the 25th. Later that morning the AMERICAN MARINER arrived with wheat for General Mills. She came in without tugs and tied up at the Frontier Elevator for unloading around 5:30AM. The tug NEW YORK went back out from Suite Kote in the notch of the DS509A at 7AM that morning. They switched the tow around to take the barge on a wire out in the lake off Windmill Point and headed West for Monroe, MI to load more asphalt. SUNNANVIK left next at 7:45PM when she backed out from Holcim unassisted, winded off the Erie Basin, and departed for Port Colborne.
The salt water ship FEDERAL MOSEL arrived from Cleveland with the second half of a split load of containerized machine equipment for the Gateway Metroport in Lackawanna on the 27th at 7AM. She met the tug VERMONT at the South Entrance and came in bow first for the dimensional unloading apron.
September got off to an interesting start on the 4th. Around 12Noon, the large ATB JOYCE L. VANENKEVORT – GREAT LAKES TRADER arrived for the CSI Landing. They came straight in from the lake without tugs and were tied up for unloading a sand cargo from Brevort about an hour later. At 6PM that evening the brand new cement carrier TAMARACK came in from Port Colborne with a load of bulk powdered product that they had loaded in Bath, Ont. the day before. She met the tug VERMONT at the North Entrance and had her take a line back aft. TAMARACK proceeded in bow first with her tug correcting any stern drift. The ship was all secured for unloading by 7PM and she spent the night discharging into the Holcim elevator on Ganson St. TAMARACK was recently completed in the Netherlands for Eureka Shipping which is partially owned, managed and crewed by Canada Steamship Lines. She arrived on the Great Lakes during late August and this was her 3rd stop so far and the 1st for Buffalo. Her contract is written such that tugs will only be required in extreme circumstances and she will normally operate alone. TAMARACK has a bow thruster and two azimuthing pods back aft for propulsion with 360° coverage, giving the ship incredible maneuverability. Later that night, around 10PM, the tug JOYCE took the TRADER out stern first from CSI and departed up the lake without assistance.
ADM finally got construction underway on the new unloading shed at the former Great Northern site during early September. It’s the final stage of the multi-million dollar redevelopment of the former elevator. The first phase was a new driveway for the wheat trucks coming over from the Standard elevator, a trailer & employee parking area, new lighting, tank containment for all the drains, and reinforcement of the retaining wall on the canal bank. The new truck unloading shed will allow trucks to pull in & out in a safer manner, de-conflicting the yard and rail tracks up front without a dangerous back up move.
