Port Reports – April 11, 2023

Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Scott Bjorklund
Duluth Entry
Mesabi Miner departed at 02:47 early Saturday morning with low sulfur coal for DTE at St. Clair. Algoma Sault arrived at 09:28 to unload salt from Goderich, ON; unfortunately, the ice and snow pack was too thick for them to make it to the dock. In the meantime, Joseph L. Block departed at 12:11 with iron ore pellets for Indiana Harbor; American Integrity arrived from anchor at 12:55 to take the Block’s place at CN#6. Algoma Sault departed at 13:30 to wait for tugs to clear Envirotech-Hallett #8. American Century departed at 15:21 with low sulfur coal for St. Clair. Once the ice was properly broken up, Algoma Sault arrived at 17:37 to successfully reach Envirotech-Hallett #8. John G. Munson arrived at 19:53 Saturday evening to load iron ore pellets at CN#6. John J. Boland ended the day’s action when they arrived at 21:02 with limestone for CN-Hallett #5.

Algoma Sault departed empty Sunday morning at 06:43 to anchor outside Superior, waiting for a spot at BNSF. John J. Boland departed soon after at 07:19, empty for Marquette. John G. Munson departed at 12:35 Easter Sunday for Gary, Indiana. American Integrity then arrived at 12:56 to load at CN.

We had a twofer under the aerial lift bridge just after midnight Monday morning! Indiana Harbor arrived at 00:20 to fuel at Cenovus and Paul R. Tregurtha arrived at 00:32 to load coal at SMET. Indiana Harbor departed at 10:01 empty to anchor outside Two Harbors. Paul R. Tregurtha departed at 16:28 with coal for DTE St. Clair. Finally, Michipicoten arrived at 17:16 to fuel before loading at Two Harbors. As of Monday night, Michipicoten was still at the fuel dock, and American Integrity was still loading at CN#6. Michipicoten should be departing sometime early Tuesday to join the group anchored off Two Harbors. American Integrity is also expected to depart early Tuesday with iron ore pellets. Burns Harbor, an infrequent visitor for Duluth, is expected mid-morning to load at CN#6. Finally, American Mariner is expected later Tuesday with limestone for Graymont.

Superior Entry
Joyce L VanEnkevort departed Superior at 06:58 Saturday morning with iron ore pellets for Toledo. James R. Barker arrived at 07:38 to load at BNSF; tug Defiance, pushing barge Ashtabula, arrived at 13:10 to take a delay at Lakehead.

The Barker departed at 02:17 Sunday morning for Burns Harbor. Algoma Guardian came in next at 03:09, and then they departed at 18:58 with iron ore pellets for Hamilton. Finally, Dirk S. VanEnkevort arrived at 19:08 Sunday night to load at BNSF.

Dirk S. VanEnkevort departed at 09:09 Monday morning with iron ore pellets for Toledo. After fenders were cleaned at the dock, Frontenac arrived at 15:28 to load at BNSF#5. As of Monday night, Frontenac was still loading with Algoma Sault and Baie Comeau waiting in line for the dock.

Two Harbors, MN – Silver Bay, MN – Gary Putney
Anchored off Two Harbors waiting on the ore dock as of Sunday night was the CSL Laurentien. The Edwin H. Gott arrived Two Harbors at 09:09 on 4/9. The Indiana Harbor was off Sand Island for Two Harbors and the Michipicoten was East of Keweenaw for Two Harbors.

Indiana Harbor and CSL Laurentien both anchored just SE of the Two Harbors entry. Michipicoten is at the fuel dock waiting on the Two Harbors ore dock. The Edwin H. Gott departed Two Harbors on 4/10 at 11:50 for Gary Works. The Presque Isle arrived Two Harbors at 14:52 on 4/10. This is her second time at the dock during this trip.

Marquette, MI – Noah H.
John J. Boland made her second arrival of the season at 04:06, coming from Duluth after unloading limestone. This already matches the previous season’s visit count. The Boland would depart for Cleveland at 16:27. A few hours later, at 21:23, the Kaye E. Barker arrived once again. She and a few other Interlake ships are leading the pack in Marquette runs so far. This includes the Herbert C. Jackson and Hon. James L. Oberstar, both on their way up now.

Muskegon, MI – Noah H.
The steamer Alpena sailed in at 19:21 with a setting sun at her stern, the tan paint on her hull matching the golden aura of the evening light. She will try and make her unloading process a bit speedier.

Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Algoma Innovator cleared 15:37 Saturday downbound for Côte-Sainte-Catherine, Quebec with salt. Algoma Mariner arrived at 12:41 Saturday and loaded at Compass Minerals. Saginaw arrived at 15:20 Saturday and was at the elevators. Saginaw cleared 15:07 Sunday downbound for Sandusky Ohio.

Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
April 9
Monroe, MI: Finally getting empty, New York/Double Skin 509A left for Detroit.
Toledo, OH: Arrivals were the Hon. James L. Oberstar and Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Challenger. Departures were CSL Niagara for Nanticoke and Hon. James L. Oberstar for Meldrum Bay.
Marblehead, ON: H. Lee White arrived to load stone at Holcim.
Sandusky, OH: Herbert C. Jackson loaded coal and left for Zug Island.
Lorain, OH: Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H. Thompson departed for Stoneport.
Cleveland, OH: McKeil Spirit arrived and is unloading at Lehigh Cement. Arthur M. Anderson was a late night arrival with 23,000 tons of UTAC pellets for the Bulk Terminal.
Erie, PA: Leaving layup was H. Lee White, bound for Marblehead.
Nanticoke, ON: Algosea and Mia Desgagnes are loading at Imperial Oil. Kitikmeot W is at anchor off of Port Dover.

April 10
Monroe, MI: Sam Laud arrived from Stoneport.
Toledo, OH: Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Challenger finished unloading a partial load and departed for Cleveland. John D. Leitch arrived to load at CSX. She departed for Hamilton after loading. Next to load at CSX was the tug barge combo Victory/Maumee. Also at CSX is Olive L. Moore/Menominee.
Marblehead, OH: H. Lee White loaded stone at Holcim and departed for Detroit.
Sandusky, OH: Saginaw arrived at 06:22 to load coal at Norfolk Southern. She left for Algoma Steel at Sault Ste. Marie once loaded.
Lorain, OH: Kathy Lynn is still on the dredging project on the Black River.
Cleveland, OH: Arthur M. Anderson departed for Cedarville after unloading at the Bulk Terminal. McKeil Spirit is unloading at Lehigh Cement. A busy day for cement carriers in Cleveland as arrivals included Petite Forte/St. Marys Cement to unload at the St. Marys Jefferson St. facility and Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Challenger for the Columbus St. terminal, while departing was Sea Eagle II/St. Marys Cement II for Detroit. Corps for Engineers tug Don Raul left the Great Lakes Shipyard and moved to the Corps dock at East 9th Street. American Courage is on the shuttles.
Ashtabula, OH: Victory/Maumee departed for Toledo.
Nanticoke, ON: CSL Niagara arrived to unload ore at Stelco. Mia Desgagnes and Algosea are loading at Imperial. Kitikmeot W and Algoterra are anchored.

Dunkirk, NY – Brian Wroblewski
Dean Marine showed up in Dunkirk, NY on the afternoon of the 9th and brought their bigger tug (ex. US Army) the ST-911 “Enduring Freedom”, a smaller tender tug (the Megan J), a spud barge (the DME 167) with excavators for dredging, & 2 bottom dump scows (the #34 & 35). They tied up at the public pier for a local dredge project.

Port Colborne, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Algoma Discovery rose from the ashes at Wharf 16 on Monday afternoon, spreading her phoenix wings for a journey up the flight locks and onto Lake Erie with a destination of Two Harbors, MN. An engine room fire in early February had left the aging bulker’s future in serious doubt, but the saltie-turned-laker is very much alive and kicking for year 36 of her storied career.
