Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Scott Bjorklund
Duluth Entry
Michipicoten arrived in Duluth early Saturday morning at 03:29 (Central) to load iron ore pellets under the chutes at CN. James R. Barker departed at 12:58 Saturday afternoon with low sulfur coal for DTE at St. Clair, Michigan. Michipicoten departed at 20:24 that night with iron ore pellets for Algoma Steel. Arthur M. Anderson was the only vessel to pass through the Duluth ship canal Sunday when they departed at 23:25 empty for Two Harbors. H. Lee White arrived at 09:55 Monday morning with limestone for Envirotech-Hallett #8. Finally, Mesabi Miner departed at 14:38 with iron ore pellets for Cleveland. As of Monday night, no vessels were in port on the Duluth side. H. Lee White may depart sometime early Tuesday empty to wait outside Superior for their turn at BNSF. Michipicoten is expected to return Tuesday mid-morning for another load of iron ore at CN#6.
Superior Entry
Joyce L. VanEnkevort departed at 11:48 (Central) Saturday morning with iron ore pellets for Ironville at Toledo. Walter J. McCarthy Jr. made their first arrival into Duluth-Superior of the season at 12:13 to load at BNSF#5; they departed at 11:24 Sunday morning with iron ore pellets for US Steel at Gary. Paul R. Tregurtha arrived at 15:36 to wait at Lakehead for space to open at the CN ore dock. Finally, Oakglen arrived at 14:33 Monday afternoon to load for Quebec City. As of Monday night, H. Lee White was still unloading at Envirotech-Hallett #8, American Spirit was preparing to depart Elevator M with the next few days, Paul R. Tregurtha was still waiting at Lakehead Pipeline, and Oakglen was loading at BNSF. Oakglen is estimated to depart sometime Tuesday morning with iron ore; the anchored Algoma Guardian will then arrive to load next. H. Lee White will be next in the lineup.
Two Harbors, MN – Silver Bay, MN – Gary Putney
The Algoma Discovery arrived Two Harbors at 22:33 on 4/15 and departed at 11:58 on 4/16 for Hamilton. The John G. Munson shifted from layby to the shiploader and she departed at 09:18 for Gary. Edwin H. Gott arrived Two Harbors at 10:28 on 4/16 after being anchored off Duluth. The Arthur M. Anderson departed Two Harbors on 4/17 08:48. The Edwin H. Gott departed either late on 4/16 or the morning of 4/17 for the Gary Works. Presque Isle, and the Michipicoten, are all potential ships to load in Two Harbors.
Cliffs-North Shore Mining in Silver Bay saw its first Freighter arrive on 4/17 at 08:18:35 when the Dirk S. VanEnkevork/Michigan Trader arrived to load.
Marquette, MI – Noah H.
Just like Saturday, a single Interlake ship comprised all of the Marquette traffic on Sunday. This time, it was the Kaye E. Barker gracing the port with her arrival at 10:16. She would not stay long, leaving at 16:15 for Dearborn after almost exactly 6 hours. A slow start to the week is expected, with no immediate arrivals listed, though the destination of the Hon. James L. Oberstar is unknown as she loads limestone.
Milwaukee, WI – MKE Marine Reports
Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Challenger arrived from Grand Haven Friday evening with cement for the Kinnickinnic River terminal. The pair cleared for Charlevoix at 09:49 Saturday. At 10:10 Saturday, the Mark W. Barker arrived with deicing salt from Cargill’s Cleveland mine. After dropping her cargo at a dockside discharge pad on the inner harbor, she cleared for Stoneport at 22:11.
Muskegon, MI – Noah H.
After a steady diet of tug/barges and the occasional Alpena visit, the first limestone arrival of the season finally came with the Herbert C. Jackson. She arrived at Cobb Verplank at 14:31 Sunday after loading the stone at Port Inland on Saturday. With the first stone delivery in the books, the floodgates should be open for some more variety in the near future.
The versatile classic departed Cobb Verplank on the eastern side of the lake at 12:57 Monday. It appears as though she is headed back to Port Inland. Last season, the Jackson’s fleet mate Kaye E. Barker would often do back-to-back Port Inland-Muskegon runs, so it’s possible that is the case here. Arriving at some point in the next few days will be the ageless Alpena and Hon. James L. Oberstar. The former is coming from Green Bay with a split load of cement, and the latter is coming from Port Dolomite with stone. The Oberstar only made one visit last season, so this is a somewhat rare occurrence. Both vessels could be delayed depending on weather conditions.
Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Federal Rideau (Montreal) arrived 15:24 Sunday and is at the elevators. Algoma Intrepid arrived 00:21 Monday and is loading at Compass Minerals. Algoma Compass arrived 08:02 Monday and tied up North Pier to load salt next. This is the Compass’ third appearance here for the new season.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
April 16
Monroe, MI: New York/Double Skin 509A is still unloading at the Port dock.
Toledo, OH: Edgar B. Speer, Manitowoc and Manitoulin are all at CSX. Victory/Maumee was a late night arrival. AIS for both Calumet and Philip R. Clarke have been activated.
Marblehead, OH: Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder loaded stone and left for Cleveland. Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H. Thompson is loading at Holcim.
Cleveland, OH: Algoma Innovator departed with salt for Montreal. Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader unloaded 34,000 tons of UTAC pellets at the Bulk Terminal, then departed for Calcite. Once the tug and barge cleared, American Mariner weighed anchor and went to the Bulk Terminal to unload. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder is anchored in Lake Erie. American Courage is on the shuttles.
Nanticoke, ON: Baie Comeau departed for Bruce Mines. Harvest Spirit is loading at Stelco while Algoma Sault unloaded ore. Mia Desgagnes is at Imperial Oil. Algonova, Algoterra and Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin are anchored off of Port Dover.
Toledo, OH: Edgar B. Speer and Victory/Maumee are at CSX. Departing were Manitoulin for Sault Ste. Marie, ON and Manitowoc for Manistee, MI.
