Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
Lower Lakes Transportation’s Manitoulin arrived with the first load of Canadian Red Wheat from Thunder Bay for the ADM Standard Elevator on April 21. She came in at 14:00, met the tug Vermont in the outer harbor, and was winded around before starting the stern-first tow up the river. They slowed to a crawl while transiting the Watson Basin because of salvage operations taking place at the Buffalo Naval Park for USS The Sullivans. The destroyer had suffered a major leak and partially sank at her dock a week earlier; the Coast Guard had since wanted all vessel traffic over 100 tons to slow down. Manitoulin was tied up at ADM Standard by 15:30, and unloading began shortly after. She was done at 15:30 on the 22nd and got underway for the lake about 15 minutes later.
