Two Harbors, MN – Silver Bay, MN – Gary Putney
As I write this report nothing has replaced the Algoma Discovery at the dock; the Algoma Discovery arrived on 4/24 at 05:55 with the help of Heritage Marine’s Nels J. She departed without tug assist at approx. 20:08 for Hamilton.
Currently outside the harbor is the Arthur M. Anderson and the Edwin H. Gott after she had been anchored off Sand Island. When the American Spirit departed she left for Conneaut. Walter J. McCarthy went to anchor off Duluth while waiting on Two Harbors. Cliffs-North Shore Mining saw the arrival of the Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader on 4/24.
Marquette, MI – Noah H.
Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader arrived at 09:11, their first arrival of the season. The Hon. James L. Oberstar and Lee A. Tregurtha are both scheduled for upcoming visits, in that order.
St. Joseph, MI – Benton Harbor, MI – Michael Moran
Manitowoc has come and gone, unloading thousands of tons of limestone to Dock 63. The vessel will head to Burns Harbor. After that, it will deliver slag elsewhere before loading aggregate material for Rieth-Riley’s Central Dock. It was great to see Captain Dave and all our Manitowoc friends! Thanks to Red Coach for the special donuts, and thanks to all who “doughnated” to help make donuts possible.
Grand Haven, MI – Noah H.
Wilfred Sykes made an early morning departure for Port Dolomite at 03:45 after a brief 5 hour unload. Much later, at 18:07, the Manitowoc became the second laker of the season as she arrived from Burns Harbor. She too would complete a 5 hour unload and head out for Port Inland at 23:21.
Muskegon, MI – Noah H.
There’s nothing quite like a legendary rivalry: Packers vs Bears, Michigan vs Ohio State, and the Kaye E. Barker vs the Muskegon sandbar. Just 4 days from the date of the Barker’s grounding on the sandbar just outside of the Muskegon entrance in 2022, the identical event happened on Monday. The Barker attempted to arrive at around 10:00 when she got stuck. Tug Meredith Ashton came out to help with a tow cable, but it snapped. The tug returned with a barge, into which the Barker partially unloaded her load of 20,000+ tons of stone. By late evening, the laker in distress was successfully lifted off the bottom, and she finally made her way through the entrance at about 20:00. Luckily, initial reports indicate no damage. Lost in the shuffle was the arrival of the Algoma Buffalo, which was supposed to be the major talking point of the day. Her first arrival since 2019 was delayed by the sandy showdown, as she anchored off the piers at 18:00 before following the Barker at 21:00. Quite an eventful day, though not one the Barker would like to three-peat.
Port McNicoll, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
On a bittersweet Monday evening, vintage passenger steamer S/S Keewatin set sail from her home port as in the days of old, only this time never to return. A pillar of Port McNicoll maritime history and a fixture in the harbor as a museum ship for the past decade, the Keewatin bid farewell to her familiar haunts at around 17:00 under tow by tug Molly M1, bound for a tune-up at Hamilton, ON, and a new life on the shores of Lake Erie. Owner Skyline Investments has donated the vessel to serve as a permanent exhibit at the Maritime Museum of the Great Lakes in Kingston, ON. The procession got underway from Port McNicoll about 30 minutes earlier than anticipated due to forecasted weather conditions out on Lake Huron.
Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Algoma Compass arrived 07:51 Monday and is loading at Compass Minerals.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Toledo, OH: Arrivals were Manitoulin, Prentiss Brown/St.Marys Challenger and Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader. Prentiss Brown departed for Cleveland.
Marblehead, OH: Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder loaded stone at Holcim and left for Cleveland.
Sandusky, OH: Arriving to load coal at Norfolk Southern were Herbert C. Jackson, Algoma Conveyor and Victory/Maumee. The Conveyor is at anchor as the Jackson got to the dock first. Victory is berthed at the dock behind the Jackson.
Lorain, OH: John J. Boland arrived with stone for Carmeuse,
Cleveland, OH: Herbert C. Jackson unloaded at Ontario Stone then departed for Sandusky. Victory/Maumee unloaded 23,000 tons of Tilden pellets at the Bulk Terminal. Once empty the tug and barge departed for Sandusky. Also leaving was the saltie Fivelborg for Chicago. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder has stone for Holcim’s West 3rd St. yard. NACC Alicudi arrived to unload cement at Holcim’s Elm St. terminal. Solina is at the Port and Sam Laud is running shuttles.
Fairport Harbor, OH: CSL Tadoussac arrived to load at Morton Salt.
Conneaut, OH: H. Lee White unloaded ore at the P&C Dock.
Buffalo, NY: Algoma Innovator is at Compass Minerals.
Nanticoke, ON: Algosea is at anchor and Algocanada is at Imperial Oil.
Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
Algoma Innovator arrived at 14:30 with salt for the Compass Minerals dome in Lackawanna.
