Two Harbors, MN – Silver Bay, MN – Gary Putney
I have no times on the shifting of these boats. During the night the Arthur M. Anderson shifted to the shiploader and the Great Republic shifted to S of #1 after loading at the shiploader. I believe now the Indiana Harbor is now showing a Gary destination.
Thunder Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
After spinning some donuts out in the bay, Algoma Equinox arrived at 07:13 to set up shop at Richardson Main. She would later make up the rest of the day’s passages by clearing the breakwall at 13:27 and eventually entering to the south once more to top off at the P&H Superior Elevator. Baie St. Paul (Viterra A) and Evans Spirit (Richardson Current River) are keeping the Equinox company in port, while Saginaw joined Harvest Spirit at anchor late Tuesday evening.
Marquette, MI – Noah H.
In the early morning on Monday, at 00:59, Sam Laud departed for Toledo, completing her first Marquette run since early 2021. Replacing her at the LS&I dock was the ATB Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader at 02:09, finally arriving after waiting out weather for a few days and then opting not to join the Laud at the dock. Later in the afternoon, the Herbert C. Jackson made another arrival at 14:17, her second of the season. On Tuesday, the Clyde S. VanEnkevort departed at 10:05 for Toledo after a 56 hour stay. For now, only the Jackson remains at the dock, while fleet mates Hon. James L. Oberstar and Kaye E. Barker await near Batchawana Bay and the Soo, respectively.
Milwaukee, WI – MKE Marine Reports
GL Ostrander/Integrity, now wearing the Holcim logo, arrived from Calumet Harbor at 14:43 Sunday with cement for the Milwaukee terminal. The pair departed for Alpena Monday morning. Algoma Compass arrived at 12:33 Monday with deicing salt from Compass Minerals, Goderich. She headed back to Goderich just after Midnight Tuesday. The last of Milwaukee’s winter fleet, tug Albert and tank barge Margaret, cleared for Green Bay at 07:07 Tuesday. Fleetmate Michigan/Great Lakes remains tied up long term in the mooring basin.
Polsteam’s Isadora will likely be Milwaukee’s first salty of 2023. She should arrive around April 12 with steel coils from IJmuiden.
Cruise season begins May 4 when Viking Octantis is scheduled to arrive. Last year Milwaukee saw 33 cruise ship visits. That number will likely increase to 39 in 2023. June 2 could be interesting. On that day Viking Polaris is scheduled to join her twin sister at Milwaukee. This will be the only visit of Polaris, which entered service in fall 2022. Both vessels measure 673 feet in length.
Grand Haven, MI – Noah H.
Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 arrived at 08:07 from Port Dolomite to unload at Verplank, before departing for another Verplank dock in Muskegon at 17:53. It’s the first traffic of the season in Grand Haven, with no lakers in the books yet, and none currently on their way.
Muskegon, MI – Noah H.
A tug swap occurred on Tuesday, with the Meredith Ashton departing at 07:27 for Ludington to begin her season, followed by the Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 arriving at 19:18 from Grand Haven. They stopped at lakeside Verplank to finish unloading their cargo from Port Dolomite.
Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Interlake boats kept cycling through Dearborn early Tuesday morning with Lee A. Tregurtha arriving from Marquette, MI, just minutes past midnight. Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H. Thompson continued upbound for Stoneport, MI, from Mistersky just after 04:00, and Leonard M/Huron Spirit cleared Windsor’s Morterm dock downbound for Cleveland, OH, at about the same time. Fresh out of lay-up at her birthplace of Erie, PA, 1,000-foot ITB Presque Isle made her first Motor City appearance of the season at noon to fuel up at Mistersky. She later departed for her old stomping grounds of Two Harbors, MN, at 16:11. In the meantime, LAT was already on her way back north to Marquette. Iver Bright finished off the day with a second appearance in as many days at 21:11. While Monday saw her at Marathon, Tuesday would see Mistersky playing host instead. Egbert Wagenborg remains at ADM.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Monroe, MI: Karen Andrie/Endeavor and New York/Double Skin 509A are both at the Port docks.
Toledo, OH: Michipicoten is unloading at Mondelez/Nabisco. Sam Laud arrived to load at Torco.
Sandusky, OH: Manitoulin loaded coal and left for Algoma Steel at Sault Ste. Marie.
Cleveland, OH: Polsteam’s Isadora is the first saltie of the season to the Port of Cleveland. Wilfred Sykes is on the first of 3 shuttles. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder departed for Marblehead and NACC Alicudi left for Bath, ON. Sea Eagle II/St. Marys Cement II is at St. Marys Jefferson St. terminal.
Conneaut, OH: Defiance/Ashtabula departed for Duluth, MN. Next to arrive was Edwin H. Gott, originally scheduled for Nanticoke.
Nanticoke, ON: Sarah Desgagnes departed with petroleum products for Tracy, PQ. At Stelco are John D. Leitch and the Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin. Once empty, the Martin departed for Stoneport. Algosea is loading at Imperial Oil.
Toronto, ON – PortToronto
President and CEO, RJ Steenstra presented the top hat to Captain Vyacheslav Tykhonov of the MV Andean, marking the arrival of the first ocean-going ship (saltie) of the 2023 season coming from Corinto, Nicaragua with over 19,000 metric tonnes of sugar for the Redpath.
