Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
At 04:28, the American Mariner’s mariners guided the vessel inbound the Duluth Ship Canal and across the harbor to Graymont Superior. The limestone cargo in her hold, mined off the shores of Lake Michigan in secluded Port Inland, would soon be rolling off the Mariner’s boom and onto the dock below. James R. Barker finished her load of taconite pellets in West Duluth in the early afternoon and began making her way up the bay for the Aerial Lift Bridge. As the footer sailed by the port terminal, she passed the classic John G. Munson casting off after taking a delay, due next at the CN 6 berth the Barker had just cleared. The James R. would officially depart Duluth at 15:10 for Indiana Harbor; the Mariner followed her outbound about 40 minutes later. The latter is making her way up the North Shore for an infrequent load of grain at Thunder Bay. Superior saw its first traffic at 20:04 with the departure of Indiana Harbor for the port of Burns Harbor. Coincidentally, the vessel with the same name was just making her way inbound off the lake and arrived around 20:40 to take Indy’s spot at BNSF Dock 5. She will be loading 63,000 tons of Hibtac for Burns Harbor, marking the third vessel in a row taking on such a cargo.
