Port and vessel activity from Monday, August 21, 2023, unless stated otherwise. Please send future port reports to news@boatnerd.net.

Two Harbors, MN – Gary Putney
As of 18:30 the James R. Barker was going around the tip of the Keweenaw heading for Two Harbors. I could see no other traffic on the map for North Shore ports.

Marquette, MI – Noah H.
Joseph L. Block arrived on Saturday at 02:44 to unload sinter from Silver Bay, a run she has completed previously this season. Once her holds were empty, she filled them again with pre destined for Indiana Harbor. That voyage began on Sunday with her 09:13 departure. A few hours later, Hon. James L. Oberstar would replace her at the dock upon her 14:17 arrival. The classic Oberstar, having just unloaded stone at the Twin Ports, only had to load ore at Marquette. Thus, her visit was shorter than the Block’s, and she was outbound for Detroit by 00:20 in the opening minutes of Monday. As one Interlake vessel left, another took its place – Kaye E. Barker arrived to take her turn under the chutes at 07:30. However, first she had to unload her load of stone from Meldrum Bay. While she remained at the southernmost ore dock for the remainder of Monday, Marquette’s personal footer American Spirit arrived at 21:48 for the usual 48-ish hour visit at the northern dock. Assuming the Barker is still loading come morning, Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader will have to anchor before their turn.

St. Marys River – Joshua Hebeisen
Viking Octantis locked downbound through the Poe at noon, officially wrapping up her final visit to Lake Superior of the season. The cruise ship is currently destined for Mackinac Island, MI, and one last 2023 tour of Lake Michigan. After that, it’s off to Toronto, ON, and then South America, where Octantis is scheduled to spend the winter months sightseeing in Argentina. Her sister Viking Polaris is still due at the Soo in mid-September.

Muskegon, MI – Noah H.
On Sunday, H. Lee White made a visit with some stone from Port Inland. After arriving at 12:51, she headed over to Cobb Verplank to deposit it, the typical unload site. While she remained there, Algoma Innovator arrived from Goderich at 19:37, carrying a load of salt. It’s a good thing this wasn’t the occasional stone run from the Innovator, as there may have had to be an unusual anchorage to wait for the White to finish up. Instead, the Innovator unloaded at the designated salt dock a little bit south of the Cobb dock. Soon after, at 22:35, the White finished up and was off to Port Inland once again. On Monday morning, at 04:49, the Innovator too finished unloading and headed out for Meldrum Bay.

Toledo, OH – Bill Kloss
Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader arrived with ore for Ironville. CSL Niagara loaded coal at CSX and departed for Hamilton, and the tug and barge Albert/Margaret left for Green Bay, WI. Algoma Niagara is at Andersons.

Sandusky, OH – Bill Kloss
Lee A. Tregurtha departed with coal for Zug Island.

Cleveland, OH – Bill Kloss
Petite Forte/St. Marys Cement is unloading at the St. Marys Jefferson St. terminal. Algoma Buffalo unloaded at Osborne then switched to Cargill to load salt. Saltie Celina arrived at the Port, berthing at Dock 26W. She has wire rods and steel bars to be unloaded. American Courage is running shuttles.

Grand River, OH – Fairport Harbor, OH – Bill Kloss
Frontenac departed with salt for Hamilton, ON.

Ashtabula, OH – Bill Kloss
Federal Mayumi is unloading at the Pinney dock. CSL St. Laurent is anchored and waiting for a berth at Pinney.

Conneaut, OH – Bill Kloss
Indiana Harbor delivered ore to the P&C Dock.

Nanticoke, ON – Bill Kloss
Edwin H. Gott arrived with ore for Stelco while tankers Algosea and Algonova are loading at Imperial Oil.

We do not currently have daily summaries for the following ports, but their respective port authority websites post schedules of vessel traffic that are featured below. Each schedule is a miniature webpage within a box. Scroll with your cursor in the box (or slide your finger within the box on a mobile device) to move through the schedule as you would a normal webpage. To move up or down the actual Port Reports page itself, make sure your cursor/finger is outside of the box.
