Port and vessel activity from Thursday, August 24, 2023, unless stated otherwise. Please send future port reports to news@boatnerd.net.

Two Harbors, MN – Gary Putney
Edwin H. Gott arrived Two Harbors at 11:42. She has no AIS destination, but I wouldn’t rule out Nanticoke. The next-closest boat for Two Harbors is the Edgar B. Speer, currently East of the Keweenaw.

Thunder Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
A pair of lakers departed for the Seaway late Thursday evening, beginning with Algoma Harvester heading out from P&H around 20:00. The Harvester, fittingly carrying a cargo of agricultural products, is destined for Baie-Comeau, QC, to unload. CSL Welland was outbound from Viterra A at 21:26, bound for her namesake canal and Montreal, QC, beyond. She, too, will be unloading harvested goods, but won’t have to sail through nearly as much salt.

The Canadian peacekeepers gone, a saltie standoff soon ensued between three rival fleet factions. Within the confines of the breakwater, Polsteam fleetmates Narie and Solina were standing guard over their inland fortress while going about their duties at MobilEx and Keefer Terminal, respectively. However, the Polish duo made sure to keep one eye peeled out on the lake, where Fednav and Navibulgar were battling for control of the anchorage. Each fleet had two soldiers on the hook to start the day — Federal Champlain and Federal Beaufort for Fednav, Perelik and Ludogorets for Navibulgar — but it would be Federal Satsuki breaking the stalemate with a noon arrival to join her team. Though Navibulgar was outnumbered as of Thursday night, reinforcements in the form of bulker Verila are due in early Friday morning.

St. Marys River – Joshua Hebeisen
Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader arrived the Soo around noon from Calcite, MI, loaded with aggregate for the Carbide Dock. While it’s not clear exactly what the cargo will be used for, two likely possibilities are local road construction in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, and/or construction of the new lock. Unloading well into the night, the pair eventually locked upbound in the Poe for Marquette, MI, around midnight. They should be heading back down the river this weekend after loading taconite from the Tilden Mine.

Marquette, MI – Noah H.
Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader departed at 15:23 following a 48+ hour visit, including unloading and anchorage times. While they head to Cleveland, fleetmate Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader will take their spot at the docks on Friday morning.

Holland, MI – Noah H.
Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 continued their cargo crusade along eastern Lake Michigan with a 06:02 arrival at Holland. This stop involved the loading of scrap metal at Padnos. That metal will be unloaded at Gary Harbor, the duo’s next stop following their 16:14 departure.

Grand Haven, MI – Ferrysburg, MI – Noah H.
It was a tug/barge kind of day at Grand Haven, starting with the early 03:21 departure of Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41, due next at Holland. Later, in the evening, Bradshaw McKee/St. Marys Conquest arrived to unload cement-related product at the St. Marys Cement dock. That 19:38 arrival should result in a late morning/early afternoon departure on Friday.

Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Algoma Conveyor cleared at 02:41 on Tuesday downbound for Becancour with salt. Algoma Niagara cleared at 17:22 on Tuesday and is upbound. Algoma Intrepid cleared at 05:00 on Tuesday downbound for Toledo with salt. Saginaw arrived at 13:50 on Thursday and is at elevators. Algoma Innovator arrived at 12:52 on Thursday and is loading at Compass Minerals. Goderich now hosted 99 vessels this season thus far.

Monroe, MI – Bill Kloss
Hon. James L. Oberstar is anchored waiting for American Century to depart. The footer left Thursday evening for Two Harbors while the Oberstar remained anchored.

Toledo, OH – Bill Kloss
Kaye E. Barker unloaded at Torco. She left for Stoneport once empty. Also departing were Wilf Seymour/Alouette Spirit to Windsor and Samuel de Champlain/Innovation to Cleveland. Algoma Intrepid is at Midwest Terminals.

Sandusky, OH – Bill Kloss
CSL Niagara was anchored waiting out currents but finally went to the dock later in the evening.

Cleveland, OH – Bill Kloss
McKeil Spirit arrived to unload at Lehigh Cement. Other arrivals were Samuel de Champlain/Innovation with cement for Holcim and Algoma Buffalo to load salt at Cargill. NACC Alicudi departed for Bath, ON, once empty. Still in port are Celina, Gardno, and American Courage. Samuel de Champlain/Innovation left for Alpena once empty.

Grand River, OH – Fairport Harbor, OH – Bill Kloss
Frontenac is loading at Morton Salt.

Ashtabula, OH – Bill Kloss
Federal Mayumi is still unloading at the Pinney Dock. CSL St-Laurent remains anchored.

Conneaut, OH – Bill Kloss
Walter J. McCarthy Jr. departed for Superior, WI, once empty.

Erie, PA – Bill Kloss
H. Lee White unloaded limestone at Carmeuse then left for Calcite.

Nanticoke, ON – Bill Kloss
CSL Tadoussac arrived with ore for Stelco, and Algoterra departed for Sarnia, ON. After unloading, CSL Tadoussac departed for Bowmanville.
