Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Shortly after submission time for yesterday’s report, Algoma Transport slipped out the Duluth Harbor at 23:43 with a load of Quebec-bound ore from CN Dock 6. The shiploader, busy as of late, would get only a few hours’ rest before being called upon by the inbound James R. Barker around 03:00. Pellets (likely UTAC) bound for Indiana Harbor would be flowing off the conveyors and into her holds on and off throughout the remainder of the day. In Superior, the steady stream of Canadian vessels continued when Algoma Intrepid passed the baton to anchored fleetmate Stongfield at about 04:00. The latter’s eventual 18:26 departure left Allouez Bay empty for the time being and marks the end of a long run of constant traffic. Algoma Central’s duo of newbuilds will be delivering ore to Hamilton and Quebec, respectively. Superior’s SMET would also see a pair of vessels at the dock over the course of the day; the first, Walter J. McCarthy Jr., left with a split load of coal for St. Clair and Monroe at 05:23. A meal of petroleum coke would soon be cooked up and ready to serve when Ashtabula/Defiance made port at 08:28. Uncommon visitors, the pair is usually due for a couple visits to Midwest Energy in any given season. Philip R. Clarke’s 09:44 Duluth departure – the second in two days – saw her head back up the lake to Two Harbors after receiving attention at Fraser. Amoenitas is at Berth 8 unloading generator sets.
Marquette, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
The upper part of town’s picturesque Presque Isle Harbor saw Dirk S. VanEnkevort arrive before noon with Michigan Trader. Tilden pellets are flowing from the northern chutes and into the barge’s holds.
St. Joseph-Benton Harbor, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Calumet was outbound at 01:50 for Indiana Harbor after unloading stone at Dock 63. Cement would also be making its way into Benton Harbor courtesy of G.L. Ostrander/Integrity, in port from 06:16 to 22:07 to unload at Holcim’s St. Joseph Cement Terminal.
Holland, MI – Bill Van Appledorn
Manitoulin delivered a split load to Verplank’s and Brewer’s.
Port Dolomite, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
After loading at Calcite, Victory/Maumee made the short trip up to Cedarville’s own Carmeuse operation at 08:45 to top off their stone cargo. Tie-up to cast-off was a little over six hours; Erie is the pair’s next destination.
Meldrum Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Algoma Innovator was in to load at 16:25.
Stoneport, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Sam Laud arrived at 11:00, loaded, and made a late-night departure for Marine City after 11 hours at the dock. Former fleetmate Buffalo was inbound next.
Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Cuyahoga departed at 04:00 for Meldrum Bay, presumably after fueling at Windsor’s Sterling. Mesabi Miner would fuel on the other side of the river at Mistersky from about 06:00 to 10:00, eventually departing upbound for Superior. Herbert C. Jackson departed Zug Island for Marquette at 08:35, international visitor Flevoborg made port at 09:03 for Nicholson, and Hon. James L. Oberstar was inbound for Dearborn at 09:59, departing empty for Stoneport about 12 hours later. Muraled CSL Welland fueled at Sterling from 15:45 to 19:15 before continuing north for Thunder Bay. Arriving around 22:00 were both Sea Eagle II/St. Marys Cement II and American Century for St. Marys Cement and Mistersky, respectively.
Port Weller, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
With a 09:13 departure from Port Weller, Algoma Guardian became the second Algoma Central vessel to fit out for the fall this week (Tim S. Dool) following a long summer slumber. Like the Dool, she too will be headed to Superior to take on her first cargo.
