Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Loaded deep with Minntac pellets, classic laker John G. Munson rolled out of Duluth at 09:28 Saturday morning headed for an unknown port (likely Gary or Conneaut) under an overcast sky. She passed by the anchored Maxima and Algoma Conveyor in the lake, waiting for Superior’s Gavilon and BNSF Dock 5, respectively. While the Conveyor had crawled to a stop just four hours earlier, Maxima has been swinging on the hook for about a week waiting for the Iryda to clear the dock. CSL Niagara was also at anchor farther south along the shoreline; she had been holding the position since 01:00 or so. The Munson’s departure allowed the waiting Joseph L. Block to shift over to the west side of CN Dock 6, where her stone cargo would be discharged into the hopper for eventual transfer to the Minnesota Iron Range. The handsome vessel started to load sinter feed under the conveyors after finishing the unloading process. At 14:17, Burns Harbor departed BNSF Dock 5 for her namesake port. The Niagara was inbound from anchor about 30 minutes later to take on a “small” load of 30,000 tons in comparison to the Burns’ 63,000. American Integrity arrived Duluth at 15:50 for another load of coal at SMET, Federal Kushiro departed at 16:38 for Thunder Bay after discharging barite, and Algoma Equinox went to anchor off Superior at 17:00.
