Marquette, MI – Noah H.
On Saturday, Lee A. Tregurtha arrived at 07:51 to occupy the northern ore dock while Victory/Maumee loaded at the southern counterpart. Such a setup is now possible with the newly dredged southern dock. The LAT would end up departing before the tug and barge, leaving for Indiana Harbor at 16:21. It would be early Sunday morning before the former AAA class barge’s departure at 00:49, headed for Toledo.
Calumet Harbor, IL – Joshua Hebeisen
Cloudy skies in Calumet Harbor made for a dreary Sunday, though vessel traffic was anything but. At 05:43, a salt-laden John D. Leitch came off Lake Michigan to complete the two-day trip from Goderich, ON. Upon backing in past the breakwall, the “bank building that floats” would find newly christened G-tugs Illinois and Indiana waiting to assist her to the Chicago Export Dock a few miles south. Meanwhile, Calumet was already unloading some NaCl of her own down by 100th Street; the Rand-ran veteran would depart her namesake river for Burns Harbor, IN, at 13:18.
Salt seasoned the morning, but cement was the story of the afternoon. After discharging the powered stuff and taking on slag at Holcim, Samuel de Champlain/Innovation cleared the harbor at 15:37 for Muskegon, MI. In a pleasant surprise, Alpena was waiting just off the breakwater ready to exchange places — and a friendly salute — with her corporate fleetmate. The steamer would sail in at 15:41 and finish the night unloading at Holcim.
