Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The H. Lee White finally backed out and departed General Mills at 10:30 AM on August 3rd without tug assistance. The 460-foot freighter Evans Spirit arrived off Buffalo light from Toledo at 6 AM on August 5th. Out near Point Abino she came up on the outbound tug Cheraw towing her derrick boat McCauley West from Gateway Metroport. They passed “on the one whistle” a few miles out and the Spirit went to anchorage off Lackawanna for the day. Around 8 PM, they picked up the hooks and headed in for the South Entrance Channel. She winded off the CRH cement plant and then backed up the Lackawanna Canal (with some difficulty) to reach the Gateway Metroport Main Dock. They tied up next to the Sucros Sourcing plant and took on a load of bulk raw cane sugar. This was probably the first time in Buffalo history that sugar has been loaded here in a bulk commodity. The Spirit is a bit of both a straight decker and self unloader. She has the cargo holds of a straight decker, but up on deck she has a specialized short boom, jib style unloading rig made to discharge cargo over the side. NACC Capri arrived on the morning of the 6th and was towed in stern first by the tug Vermont at 8AM.
