Port and vessel activity from Tuesday, August 8, 2023, unless stated otherwise. Please send future port reports to news@boatnerd.net.

Two Harbors, MN – Gary Putney
Mesabi Miner departed Two Harbors on August 8 at 15:07 for Indiana Harbor.
Michipicoten is East of Keweenaw at 18:00 heading for the Two Harbors shiploader.

Silver Bay, MN – Gary Putney
The Dirk S. VanEnkevort was still in Silver Bay with a Toledo destination.

Thunder Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Thunder Bay was booming Tuesday in the midst of a nice storm of ship traffic. At 02:31, Kaministiqua made port to load her typical grain at Richardson Main. Farther to the south, Florence Spirit arrived about an hour later to take on some grain of her own at P&H.

The grain train just kept on rolling at 14:43 with the departure of Algoma Niagara from Viterra B. Setting course for the Twin Ports, the Niagara will be unloading her cargo at Hansen-Mueller Elevator M in Superior, WI, a rare move that has occurred just twice over the past few decades. Both of those deliveries came courtesy of Algoma Sault, Niagara’s sister, with the most recent taking place just last month. It is very possible that this run will become more frequent in the months to come.

Florence Spirit was already heading back outbound for Baie-Comeau, QC, at 18:22, and Federal Oshima followed in her wake at 19:35. The latter loaded grain at Viterra A for Montreal, QC, and an eventual overseas journey. CSL St-Laurent arrived from anchor for A shortly thereafter. Kaministiqua’s departure for Sorel-Tracy, QC, at 20:29 allowed for another switch, with the anchored Ocean Castle heading in to take her place an hour later.

Marquette, MI – Noah H.
Hon. James L. Oberstar departed at 17:32 for Indiana Harbor after a somewhat long visit totaling over 20 hours. It’s a rather unusual destination to unload at for the Oberstar, which typically heads to Detroit like the rest of Interlake’s classics. Next up will be the American Spirit.

Drummond Island – Drummond, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Herbert C. Jackson arrived at 18:37 to load stone at Drummond Dolomite. She will eventually arrive Grand Haven, MI, to unload at Ferrysburg, MI, up the river.

Cedarville – Port Dolomite, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
American Mariner called on Carmeuse Cedarville at 18:09.

Port Inland – Gulliver, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
In a meeting of the “Mani”s at Port Inland, Manitoulin departed at 13:45 with Manitowoc taking her place. The ‘Toulin was on her way to Spragge, ON, with the ‘Towoc loading stone for Manistee, MI. Wilfred Sykes was waiting out on the lake as of Tuesday night.

Indiana Harbor – East Chicago, IN – Joshua Hebeisen
Indy was in for an adventure on Tuesday with up to five ships in the harbor at once. As the clock struck midnight, Joseph L. Block was already at Cleveland-Cliffs Dock 7H to get things started. She would be joined in port by Mark W. Barker at 04:53 and Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 at 09:41. The Baby Barker tied up at Dock 2, presumably to load. The tug/barge, undaunted by the larger vessel’s presence, would pull up right behind to unload scrap from Padnos in Holland, MI.

The Block backed away from 7H and into the lower harbor late morning, allowing John D. Leitch and Lee A. Tregurtha to arrive from anchor at 10:18 and 13:20, respectively. The Leitch would load aggregate at Dock 6, with Lee just to the south unloading Tilden taconite at 7H. The Block would eventually clear at 15:00 for Port Dolomite, MI, while an empty Undaunted/Pere Marquette left for Milwaukee, WI, at 21:20.

Calcite – Rogers City, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader cleared the northern berth for Lorain, OH, at 13:16. Kaye E. Barker was immediately in from the anchorage to take over.

Bruce Mines, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Algoma Compass arrived at 07:00 to load, departing 12 hours later with trap rock for Marysville, MI. Fleetmate Algoma Sault was in the process of arriving around 20:30 before suddenly heading back to anchor in the lake. Perhaps she needs a… compass?

Meldrum Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Spotty AIS strikes again, but Algoma Intrepid appeared to depart sometime in the wee hours of the morning. She would unload her stone cargo at Sarnia, ON, and Mooretown, ON, both on the Canadian side of the St. Clair River.

Monroe, MI – Bill Kloss
American Century arrived with coal for DTE. New York/Double Skin 509A is unloading liquid asphalt for Michigan Paving & Materials.

Toledo, OH – Bill Kloss
Arrivals were Saginaw to load at CSX, Victory/Maumee to load at Torco, Evans Spirit to Midwest Terminals and Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Challenger to unload at St. Marys Cement. Victory/Maumee departed with coal for Sault Ste. Marie.

Marblehead, OH – Bill Kloss
Sam Laud departed for Marysville with limestone.

Sandusky, OH – Bill Kloss
John J. Boland left with coal for Sault Ste. Marie, stopping for fuel at Misterskys on the way. Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin then moved under the loader. She departed for Nanticoke once loaded.

Cleveland, OH – Bill Kloss
Algoma Buffalo loaded road salt and left for Oshawa and Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Challenger departed for Toledo after unloading a partial load.

Grand River, OH – Fairport Harbor, OH – Bill Kloss
Frontenac loaded at Morton and departed for Johnstown, ON. Once Frontenac cleared, CSL Tadoussac weighed anchor and moved to Morton to load road salt.

Conneaut, OH – Bill Kloss
Walter J. McCarthy Jr. left for the Twin Ports once empty. American Integrity is anchored in Lake Erie.

Lackawanna, NY – Buffalo, NY – Tonawanda, NY – Brian Wroblewski
After anchoring in three different places off Buffalo between Monday afternoon and Tuesday, the Defiance/Ashtabula finally came in for CSI at 21:00. I’m not really sure why they stayed out there so long, but I did notice the wind had backed off at the time they came in.

Nanticoke, ON – Bill Kloss
Departing from Stelco were Atlantic Huron to Superior, WI, and Edwin H. Gott to Two Harbors, MN. Algoterra, Algosea and Algonova are all at anchor.
