Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
On the second consecutive day with just two Twin Ports passages, fleetmates American Mariner and American Century arrived Duluth a few hours apart to set up shop in the inner harbor.
Mariner was inbound the piers at about 16:15 with a load of limestone from Rogers City/Calcite. The Carmeuse Calcite Operation has finished mining for the season, but is expected to continue loading vessels off the stockpile for about two more weeks pending weather. This delivery by the Mariner should be one of the last the Twin Ports see until 2023. Though due at CN-Hallett 5 to unload, the vessel stopped for fuel at Superior Refining for two hours before pulling away and beginning the 90-minute trek farther into the St. Louis Bay.
Century would arrive after dark at 21:19, backing under the Blatnik Bridge and snuggling up against the SMET dock for 68,000 tons of coal. With lots of naughty boatnerds’ stockings to fill in just a few weeks, shipment of petroleum products is still going strong and projects to continue into January. This particular delivery will be going to DTE’s offloading site in St. Clair and eventually the Belle River Power Plant. In an end of an era, the nearby St. Clair Power Plant was formally shut down by the company on Thursday, December 8, concluding a decades-long history of Twin Ports coal shipments to the facility.
Saltie Resko remains at Berth 2 of the port terminal unloading barite. She is expected to take on a load of grain before leaving the Seaway, but it remains to be seen if this will occur in Duluth, Superior, or elsewhere.
Marquette, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
A dry spell at Muskegon was ended on Friday with the rare visitor Manitowoc arriving at 14:29 to unload at Verplank. This was only the second arrival this year for the river class vessel, the first coming in May. She would depart at 22:40 for Indiana Harbor.
Saginaw River – Todd Shorkey
Iver Bright was inbound the Saginaw River on Wednesday, December 7, headed for the Port Fisher slip to unload for Bit-Mat Products. She was assisted to the dock by the tug Manitou.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Monroe, MI: New York/Double Skin 509A is still at the Port dock.
Sandusky, OH: John J. Boland departed with coal for Algoma Steel at the Soo.
Cleveland, OH: Mark W. Barker arrived late Thursday night to load salt at Cargill. She departed in the evening for Burns Harbor. Bradshaw McKee/St. Marys Challenger arrived early Friday morning, unloaded cement then left for Charlevoix. CG Morro Bay arrived back at her home Port after finishing a tour of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Leonard M/Huron Spirit unloaded steel coils and departed for Monroe, MI. The saltie Humbergracht left for Milwaukee, WI. In port are Federal Clyde and American Courage.
Ashtabula, OH: Eeborg and Oakglen both finished with their unloads and departed. Oakglen for Quebec City and Eeborg to Windsor, ON. Next to arrive at the Pinney dock was the saltie Ocean Castle to unload Ilmenite.
Erie, PA: Merwedegracht is unloading at Carmeuse.
Nanticoke, OH: Departing was CSL Niagara to Duluth-Superior and Algoma Hansa to Tracy, PQ. Arrivals were Arthur M. Anderson with ore for Stelco and Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin and Presque Isle, both anchoring off of Port Dover along with Harbour Fountain. Algosea and Susana S are at Imperial Oil.
Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The NACC ARGONAUT came back to Buffalo after a long hiatus on December 9th at 9PM. She met the VERMONT outside the North Entrance, was winded in the Outer Harbor, and then towed up to Holcim Cement stern first. Next up will be DEFIANCE/ASHTABULA on the 10th with sand for CSI.
