Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Harbor ice would prove troublesome to start the weekend in Duluth, a trend that is sure to continue throughout the rest of the season and potentially into the next. Attempting to leave CN-Hallett Dock 5 at around 06:00 to head outbound for the lake, American Mariner would struggle to get turned around for over an hour before finally speeding up and officially leaving port in a light snowfall at 08:45. She is headed up to Thunder Bay to pick up a load of wheat for Buffalo. Just after noon, American Century would also clear the Duluth piers with a full load of coal for St. Clair. She would not require the icebreaking assistance of a tug, but fleetmate Indiana Harbor, inbound five hours later for CN Dock 6, called on the trusty Missouri to help escort her to the shiploader. Polsteam saltie Resko cast off from her berth at the port terminal after dark upon finishing unloading barite, following in the footsteps of American Mariner by heading up the North Shore for Thunder Bay and a load of wheat. Her exit, wrapping up activity for the day, was officially logged as 19:16.
Two Harbors, MN – Joshua Hebeisen
Burns Harbor strayed from her typical Superior route to load in Agate Bay, arriving at 04:03 to take on taconite at the CN Dock 2 shiploader.
Marquette, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
Some slow days at Marquette are being followed with a quick flurry of traffic, starting with the dependable Hon. James L. Oberstar arriving with stone at 03:36 and departing at 21:12, likely for Dearborn. In between the Oberstar’s arrival and departure times, Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader arrived at 19:55, a less common visitor. The mighty Wilfred Sykes will be making another visit in the coming days; after not making the trip since 2018, this will be her third in the past month or so, and it won’t be her last of the season. It is a welcome surprise for Marquette boatnerds, with the Sykes evidently having an end-of-season routes shift. Also coming soon is the Victory/Maumee.
Milwaukee, WI – Timothy Keefe
Herbert C. Jackson was in port delivering stone from Stoneport, MI, and departed mid-morning for Calcite.
Grand Haven, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
The Wilfred Sykes steamed into Grand Haven at 11:35, and was already gone by 16:34 for a very fast 5-hour turnaround. The Sykes is headed next for Marquette, which combined with Grand Haven will make for a lot of the Sykes’ trips for the rest of the season.
Port Dolomite, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder departed at 09:59 for Bay City with stone. Like the other Carmeuse operations around the lakes, Cedarville should be approaching the end of the shipping season.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Monroe, MI: Arrivals were Mesabi Miner with coal for DTE and Leonard M/Huron Spirit with steel coils for the Port.
Sandusky, OH: Algoma Transport arrived at 03:05 to load coal at Norfolk Southern. She left at 19:31 for Bowmanville, ON.
Cleveland, OH: Walter J. McCarthy, Jr. arrived at the Bulk Terminal with UTAC pellets. Federal Clyde is at the Port docks.
Fairport Harbor, OH: Now a regular visitor, Frontenac returned from Toronto for another load of salt at Morton.
Ashtabula, OH: Ocean Castle is at the Pinney dock.
Conneaut, OH: Arthur M. Anderson arrived at the P&C dock.
Erie, PA: Merwedegracht departed with no destination update.
Buffalo, NY: NACC Argonaut arrived late Friday night, going to Holcim Cement assisted by G tugs Vermont and Oklahoma. She departed for Bath, ON once empty. Defiance/Ashtabula arrived Saturday evening, going into the South Channel to unload.
Nanticoke, ON: Arthur M. Anderson unloaded ore at Stelco, then left for Conneaut, OH. Presque Isle was next to unload. Once empty the tug and barge departed for Duluth, MN once empty. Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin weighed anchor and went to Stelco with yet another delivery of ore. Chemical tanker Susana S departed with petroleum products for New York City. Algosea is at Imperial Oil. Harbour Fountain is at anchor. Algoterra and Harvest Spirit were late night arrivals.
Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
Grand River’s big ATB DEFIANCE – ASHTABULA arrived around 7 PM on the 10th with a partial sand cargo for Gateway Metroport. They came in the South Entrance and headed for the West side of the Lackawanna Canal to drop off the first part of a split load between Gateway and CSI. Around this time, the NACC ARGONAUT was getting underway from Holcim with the VERMONT checking her stern. They dropped the tug at the Watson Basin, came out the North Entrance, and headed for Port Colborne on the way back to Bath where they would take on another load of cement.
