Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
A cold, windy day on Lake Superior froze up photographers and the frigid waters but not vessel traffic as the season begins to near its finish line. American Integrity arrived Superior at 02:19 to take a delay at the Enbridge dock for unspecified port services – perhaps to thaw out and warm up her paws after an arctic trip across the big lake. She is eventually due at nearby BNSF Dock 5 to take on a load of taconite pellets.
John J. Boland was back in Duluth at 10:10 for the second time in a week, this time bringing in limestone from Calcite to deliver at CN-Hallett Dock 5. As with her last trip, she is expected to shift over to SMET and take on petroleum coke for delivery to Alpena. Occupying the coal-loading dock in the meantime will be Paul R. Tregurtha, arriving just before 13:00 to take up her weekly berth and 68,000 tons of the black stuff.
At 18:02, a saltwater vessel arrived beneath the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge for the final time in 2022. Fednav’s Federal Kushiro was inbound to load wheat at Riverland Ag and will hold the distinction of being the last saltie hosted by the Twin Ports this shipping season. Just over five hours later in Superior, John D. Leitch was the last passage of the day with an inbound trip to BNSF. James R. Barker is still loading at CN Dock 6 in West Duluth – Moosey must be causing trouble…
Two Harbors, MN – Joshua Hebeisen
An exchange of ASC footers took place in Agate Bay Tuesday afternoon with Burns Harbor setting out for Indiana Harbor and American Spirit coming in on one engine to load at the shiploader. Heritage Marine tug Nels J. assisted both vessels in the bay. Eager to get in off the cold lake, the Spirit’s recorded 14:13 arrival time actually predated Burns Harbor’s official departure time by eight minutes.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Marblehead, OH: Manitowoc departed with stone for Marine City, MI.
Sandusky, OH: Manitoulin arrived to load at Norfolk Southern.
Cleveland, OH: Once Mesabi Miner cleared the breakwall and departed for Superior, WI, American Courage moved to the Bulk Terminal to load a shuttle. The ATB Victory/Maumee anchored in the lake and waited for the Courage to clear before going to the dock. Their roles were reversed in the afternoon as the Courage waited for the Victory/Maumee to unload. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder loaded salt at Cargill and delivered a split load to Osborne and to Cliffs, then left for Marblehead. At the Port, Qamutik departed for Valleyfield, PQ and Federal Dart left for Detroit.
Fairport Harbor, OH: Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H. Thompson departed with no updated destination on her AIS.
Ashtabula, OH: Federal Dee is at the Pinney Dock.
Erie, PA: Spliethoff’s Merwedegracht is unloading at Carmeuse.
Nanticoke, ON: Departing were CSL Niagara to Sandusky, OH and Philip R. Clarke. Presque Isle is at Stelco unloading ore and over at Imperial Oil, Algoma Hansa is loading petroleum products.
