Port Reports – December 4, 2022

Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Windy weather continues to be the story on Superior, though some boats (and a moose) who spent time waiting out the weather farther east on the lake were finally able to make port beginning on Friday afternoon. James R. Barker was inbound the Duluth Ship Canal at 15:52 under the watchful eyes of Captain Brad Newland and the especially watchful (plastic) eyes of protégé Moosey Smith. The warmer weather ensured that the horns were loud and clear for another big Barker Bark, though this may be the last one of the year – Captain Brad is reportedly about to go on winter break, and Moosey has been instructed to keep his hooves the whistle controls until he gets back. We’ll see what happens… The industry has not yet adopted good PTO benefits for stuffed critters, so Moosey will not be receiving a break of his own until winter layup. The Barker would eventually make her way to CN Dock 6 for a load of taconite pellets.

Other Friday traffic included the Arthur M. Anderson going to the anchorage at 18:00, loaded with her last stone cargo from Calcite of the season. American Century arrived via the piers at 19:21 for a split load of coal (St. Clair/Monroe) at SMET. The lights of Joseph L. Block appeared over the horizon late evening and eventually made their way through the canal 42 minutes into the new morning. Due next at CN, her destination was the east side of the dock for lay-by.

As if the wind wasn’t bad enough, Saturday came with chilly single-digit temperatures that ventured into the negatives. Boatnerds sure wouldn’t mind the impressive sea smoke that came with, however, providing a stunning photo frame behind the classic Anderson as she left the anchorage and arrived Duluth at 07:51. AMA steamed down the harbor to C. Reiss to unload sugar stone, soon to be used at sugar beet processing plants in the Red River Valley.

Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader arrived Superior at 10:38 to load at BNSF, while American Century departed for the lake and beyond at the same time back in Duluth. Philip R. Clarke went to anchor after taking a weather-induced scenic route along the North Shore; she is carrying stone from Stoneport and reportedly due next at CN. Dirk and Trader finished up the first half of the weekend with a 20:40 departure for Toledo, loaded with 34,000 tons of Hibtac product.

Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
No vessel traffic in Goderich the last few days – too windy… Algoma Intrepid expected sometime…

Lake Erie Ports (12/3) – Bill Kloss
Monroe, MI: New York/Double Skin 509A is at the Port dock unloading asphalt. Departing were Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader for Duluth and Karen Andrie/Endeavor for Burns Harbor, IN.
Toledo, OH: Victory/Maumee loaded ore at Torco and left for Algoma Steel at the Soo. Manitowoc arrived later in the afternoon.
Sandusky, OH: CSL Niagara is anchored in Lake Erie.
Lorain, OH: Manitowoc finished unloading stone at Carmeuse and departed for Toledo.
Cleveland, OH: Departures were NACC Capri light for Montreal, PQ and Mark W. Barker with salt for Toledo.  American Courage loaded another shuttle for Cliffs.
Nanticoke, OH: Harbour Fountain loaded gasoline for Green Bay, WI. Algoma Hansa, Algosea, Algoterra and Algonorth are all anchored.

Lake Erie Ports (12/2) – Bill Kloss
Monroe, MI: New York/Double Skin 509A is at the Port dock. Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader brought in coal for DTE.
Toledo, OH: Victory/Maumee came in to load at Torco.
Marblehead, OH: Manitowoc arrived to load stone at Holcim. Once loaded, she departed for Lorain, OH.
Sandusky, OH: Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader loaded coal and departed for Monroe, MI. Michipicoten loaded for Algoma Steel at the Soo
Lorain, OH: Manitowoc arrived with stone for Holcim.
Cleveland, OH: NACC Capri arrived and proceeded to Holcim Cement. Mesabi Miner departed for Duluth once empty. Mark W. Barker returned to Cargill for another salt cargo and American Courage is running shuttles.
Fairport Harbor, OH: Once empty, the ATB Defiance/Ashtabula departed for Port Dolomite.
Buffalo, NY: Radcliffe R. Latimer departed with a destination of Sarnia, ON.
Nanticoke, OH: CSL Niagara unloaded and departed for Sandusky, OH. Harbour Fountain is at Imperial OIl. Anchored off of Port Dover are Algoma Hansa, Algosea and Algoterra.
