Port Reports – January 12, 2023

Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
A common Twin Ports visitor bid farewell for the season at 04:32 Wednesday morning. Burns Harbor, always a frequent customer at BNSF Dock 5, departed Allouez Bay with one last load of Hibtac pellets for her namesake port. She and her unsatiable appetite will most certainly be back and ready for more pellets this spring. Indiana Harbor shifted over from Enbridge to load in her place, eventually departing for Conneaut at 23:21. 

H. Lee White was inbound the Duluth Ship Canal at 08:12 to take on a load of grain at General Mills Superior. Not originally scheduled to make the trip, the White is loading for Buffalo in place of her injured fleetmate American Mariner, who sits nearby in dry dock at Fraser Shipyards. The Mariner will presumably winter in the Twin Ports and potentially receive a five-year survey during her extended stay. Another surprise came in the form of Algoma Conveyor, heading down from Thunder Bay with salt for Compass Minerals. She had originally loaded at Goderich and presumably discharged the first part of her cargo at Thunder. The Conveyor made her entrance beneath the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge at 22:31.

Other vessels in port as of Wednesday night included James R. Barker loading at CN Dock 6 and Arthur M. Anderson waiting south of the shiploader. Victory/Maumee sit at anchor off the piers waiting their turn at the dock.

Escanaba, MI – Know Your Ships
Motor vessel Algoma Intrepid is scheduled to transit the southern end of Little Bay De Noc from Green Bay (Minneapolis Shoal LT) to Escanaba on the 12th and 13th of January 2023. The vessel is delivering a load of salt to the community.

Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Kingsville, ON: Cuyahoga has stone for Southwestern Sales Co.
Toledo, OH: Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader has ore for Ironville. Paul R. Tregurtha arrived late Wednesday night.
Cleveland, OH: Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Challenger was a late night arrival to unload cement. Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H. Thompson is docked at the Port and getting repairs. Sam Laud is on the shuttles.
Conneaut, OH: American Century unloaded ore at the P&C Dock. She left for Toledo once empty.
Nanticoke, OH: Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin departed for Buffalo to load coal. Algoterra and Algosea are at Imperial Oil. 

Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
On the 9th of January, the AMERICAN MARINER suffered some sort of hull damage and had to take the H. LEE WHITE’s place on the dry dock in Superior. The WHITE was then switched to the MARINER’s planned run to Buffalo with a last of the season Winter storage load out of Superior. This will be her 1st ever time here in Buffalo with a layup load of grain.

On the morning of the 11th, the BOLAND made her move from Gateway to CSI via the lake around 8AM without tug assistance. Later that afternoon, around 1PM, the Rt. Hon. PAUL J MARTIN arrived off Lackawanna. She came in the South Entrance, turned up the harbor, stopped, and then backed herself into the Lackawanna Slip for the Gateway Metroport Main Dock. The ship was secured about half way down at the bulk loading apron and she then began taking on a load of coal from two portable conveyors that were fed by high lifts from a big pile of product on the dock.
