Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Right on the heels of an Indiana Harbor departure late Wednesday night, Stewart J. Cort arrived Superior two minutes into Thursday, January 12, to take on one last load before lay-up. #1 has spent the entirety of her abbreviated season shuttling ore from BNSF Dock 5 to Lake Michigan’s Burns Harbor, and this trip would be no exception. American Integrity arrived Duluth at 02:05 for the season’s final load of coal from SMET. This last 68,000 tons will be destined for St. Clair.
Some shifting at CN 6 took place later in the morning when James R. Barker cast off for Cleveland. Departing beneath the bridge at 11:23 with one last Bark for the season, JRB cleared the way for nearby Arthur M. Anderson to move into position beneath the conveyors. Victory/Maumee, anchored out in the lake, made an uncommon transit of the Duluth Ship Canal at 11:43 to wait at the east side of CN. Another Grand River tug/barge in Defiance/Ashtabula were on hand later in the afternoon to hold down the anchorage.
Other traffic on the day continued with the 17:59 departure of Algoma Conveyor, wrapping up a rare visit to Duluth after discharging salt at Compass Minerals. A simple reverse and 180-degree spin had the newbuild on her way to Goderich and more NaCl. H. Lee White headed out just over an hour later with a load of grain from Superior’s General Mills elevator, headed to Buffalo in place of injured fleetmate American Mariner. Former fleetmate American Integrity departed at 23:05 to wrap up another season’s coal traffic.
Arthur M. Anderson got things heated up on Friday, January 13, by steaming out for Conneaut, allowing Victory/Maumee to shift over to the shiploader around 05:00. Saginaw arrived to anchor at 10:30 waiting her turn at BNSF. Stewart J. Cort departed at 21:09, but it would be Ashtabula/Defiance — originally scheduled to load at Duluth — slipping in next. Saginaw will be making a few shuttles to Algoma Steel before the season ends and will not need to transit the locks; thus, the eventual lower lakes-bound tug/barge combo likely had priority.
St. Marys River – Know Your Ships
The were only two downbound passages at the locks on a rare sunny Friday. Harvest Spirit was downbound for Windsor in the late afternoon, followed by the tug/barge Leonard M/Huron Spirit for Detroit. Several downbound vessels are expected Saturday as the season comes to a close.
Lake Erie Ports (January 13) – Bill Kloss
Toledo, OH: Karen Andrie/Endeavor is in port. Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Challenger departed for Charlevoix, MI.
Cleveland, OH: Walter J. McCarthy, Jr. is anchored in Lake Erie. Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H. Thompson and Sam Laud are both docked at the Port.
Ashtabula, OH: Cuyahoga arrived for lay up.
Conneaut, OH: Edgar B. Speer departed for Toledo. John J. Boland is at the P&C Dock.
Nanticoke, OH: Algosea departed with petroleum products for Sarnia, ON. Rt. Hon Paul J. Martin left for Port Colborne.
Lake Erie Ports (January 12) – Bill Kloss
Toledo, OH: Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader departed for lay up in Sturgeon Bay, WI. American Century arrived and joined Paul R. Tregurtha in lay up. Karen Andrie/Endeavor and Prentiss Brown/St.Marys Challenger were late night arrivals.
Kingsville, ON: Once empty, Cuyahoga departed for Windsor, ON.
Cleveland, OH: Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Challenger had a quick unload and left for Toledo. Walter J. McCarthy, Jr. was a late night arrival with 60,000 tons of UTAC pellets for the Bulk Terminal. Sam Laud continues running the shuttles.
Conneaut, OH: Edgar B. Speer has ore for the P&C Dock. John J. Boland arrived late Thursday night.
Erie, PA: Algoma Innovator arrived to unload road salt. She left for Goderich once empty.
Buffalo, NY: John J. Boland departed for Conneaut and Rt. Hon Paul J. Martin loaded coal and departed for Nanticoke.
Nanticoke, OH: Algoterra departed with petroleum products for Sarnia, ON. Algosea is loading at Imperial Oil. Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin arrived with coal for Stelco.
Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The JOHN J BOLAND had the VERMONT come down and tow her out stern first for the lake from CSI at 12 Noon on the 12th. She was followed out later by the Rt. Hon. PAUL J MARTIN at 2PM when she departed Lackawanna bound for Nanticoke with her coal cargo.
