Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Supper in Superior came with a side of Saginaw on Tuesday night; the classic laker arrived Allouez Bay at 18:40 on another shuttle run to the Soo. With as rare a sight as she is in the Twin Ports, her appearance might actually be best described as dessert. Another overnight load of taconite awaits the 1953-vintage vessel before she once again sails off for Algoma Steel. As of now, this is believed to be the last commercial activity in port for the season.
Winter visitors in port for lay-up include American Mariner in dry dock at Fraser Shipyards with Lee A. Tregurtha and Edward L. Ryerson moored nearby. American Spirit is napping a little ways away at Enbridge.
Sturgeon Bay, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Finished with orders for the season, John G. Munson came off Green Bay around 06:30 and began a short-lived stint at anchor off Sherwood Point. Walter J. McCarthy Jr. was also on the hook in the vicinity. Mighty Munson eventually rumbled inbound to her winter berth at 08:51, followed in just over an hour later by the footer.
Vessels already at the Sturgeon Bay Bash include Wilfred Sykes, Edwin H. Gott, Mesabi Miner, Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader, and Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader. Indiana Harbor, Joseph L. Block, and Mark W. Barker are expected to join in the coming days.
Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Perhaps (and understandably) a little jealous of all the other boats getting some rest, Whitefish Bay begrudgingly trudged up to the Windsor Salt dock around 01:00 for another load of sodium chloride destined for South Chicago, IL. On the bright side, she would get a great view of her crush, steamer Alpena, as the classic beauty passed by on the river around 07:00 while upbound from Cleveland, OH. A short stay at Mistersky saw the cement carrier continue on for her namesake port shortly after 11:00.
The fuel dock would continue to be occupied throughout the day, with Joseph L. Block next on the docket less than two hours later. Her AIS destination reads “VEGAS BABY,” though I’m not quite sure how they’re going to get there. If I were a betting man, I’d put money on her crew settling for Sturgeon Bay, WI, when it’s all said and done. The Block’s upbound departure at 14:30 gave way for Mark W. Barker to take over. Loaded with salt from Cleveland, OH, the Baby Barker just had to stop by for one more drink on her way to Burns Harbor, IN, and subsequent lay-up in Sturgeon Bay. She would clear at 17:01. Iver Bright made the day’s last port call, also at Mistersky, arriving from Sarnia, ON, at 17:39.
Burns Harbor made a noteworthy passage southbound through the Detroit River around 20:30 Tuesday night. The footer, a rare sight to see on any lake not named Superior or Michigan, is on her way to Toledo, OH, for a long winter’s nap. This will be the first time she has laid-up at a Lake Erie Port since the ’80s, according to Marc Dease.
New York/Double Skin 509A remain at Nicholson Detroit, while Manitoulin continues her stay at ADM in Windsor.
A trio of vessels in port for winter lay-up includes Hon. James L. Oberstar at Nicholson Ecorse as well as McKeil fleetmates Florence/Harvest Spirit at Morterm.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Toledo, OH: Arthur M. Anderson arrived from Conneaut to layup.
Cleveland, OH: Mark W. Barker departed with salt for Burns Harbor, IN. Also leaving was Sam Laud, at anchor off of Point Pelee, ON. American Courage is now the sole boat on the shuttles. James R. Barker, Olive L. Moore/Menominee and Victory/Maumee are all anchored in Lake Erie. The trio are waiting to unload at the Bulk Terminal once there is enough room for the pellets that they have. Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader arrived at the Port, alongside fleetmate Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H. Thompson. Both are laying up in Cleveland.
Conneaut, OH: Indiana Harbor arrived with the last ore load for the P&C Dock for the season. She is anchored in Lake Erie.
Nanticoke, ON: Algonova departed with petroleum products for Green Bay, WI. Algoterra was joined by Algosea at Imperial Oil.
