Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The first week of July was quiet around Buffalo Harbor as a mid-summer slump in activity wore on. Finally, Grand River Navigation’s 680-foot self-unloader John J Boland broke the silence when she arrived for the Canadian Silica Landing at 10AM on July 8th. She came in relatively quickly considering they did not have a tug and made all the maneuvers with the thrusters. Once off the unloading apron, the captain ordered all the lines out to secure the ship at center of channel because of an oncoming squall. They launched their small boat to get the deck gang ashore and a payloader from the plant came over to help them drag the lines over to the buried pad eyes in the ground. The ship spent the rest of the day and half of that night unloading all along the apron there. Around 5PM, Nova-Algoma’s NACC Capri came in for LaFarge with a full load of cement from Bath, Ontario. She went through the North Entrance, turned to face South, and winded in the Outer Harbor with some help from the tug Vermont. The tow proceeded in stern first just as more heavy rain arrived making the trip a little tricky due to reduced visibility. The tug was released as they passed the Burnett dock and the Vermont helped them back in to the LaFarge elevator by putting some light pressure on the Starboard side, easing the stern in for mooring. The first one to depart was the Boland under stern first tow by the Vermont at 1AM on the 9th.
