Port and vessel activity from Sunday, July 16, 2023, unless stated otherwise. Please send future port reports to news@boatnerd.net.

Thunder Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
The party was over for CCGS Samuel Risley and company following Saturday’s Coast Guard and Maritime History Day celebration and an influx of commercial traffic. Leaving her Canadian Coast Guard friends at Pool 6 after a sleepover at the dock, the Risley ventured back over to Keefer Terminal at around 09:00 to tie up for the day. With her AIS still reading Thunder Bay, it’s unclear how much longer the cutter will spend in port. The only vessel passing through the piers would be Canfornav’s Andean at 17:38; the saltie departed for Montreal, QC, after loading an unknown cargo at Thunder Bay Terminals.

Despite the lack of movement, the inner harbor was quite full on Sunday with CSL’s Thunder Bay at Viterra B; Fednav’s Federal Nakagawa at Thunder Bay Terminals, Polsteam’s Lubie at Richardson Main, and Canfornav’s Blacky at Keefer Terminal. Navibulgar’s Osogovo is waiting her turn in the anchorage.

Marquette, MI – Noah H.
Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader arrived Marquette at 12:10. After a likely early morning departure on Monday, the thousand-foot American Spirit will replace the tug/barge at the docks.

Holland, MI – Noah H.
Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder departed at 07:13 after unloading at Brewer’s City Dock. The duo is headed next for Port Inland at a blistering speed of nearly 9.5 knots.

Muskegon, MI – Noah H.
Meredith Ashton pulled her barge AM 3600 through the piers at 14:42.

Stoneport, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Spotty AIS coverage made the exact time unclear, but Defiance/Ashtabula arrived sometime after 16:00 to take on another load of stone. The pair had been at the dock just days earlier and loaded for Marysville, MI. We’ll see if the tug/barge will head back down south again after this load.

Saginaw River – Joshua Hebeisen
Holcim is going to be practically flooded with cement to start the week after back-to-back deliveries on the schedule. Alpena arrived Essexville, MI, at 14:42 Sunday afternoon with a powdered load from her namesake port, and it appears that she will hand off the baton directly to the inbound G.L. Ostrander/Integrity sometime on Monday. The steamer is offloading fresh cargo from her namesake port, while the tug/barge is coming all the way from Cleveland, OH, with only a partial load remaining in the holds.

Meldrum Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Algoma Mariner departed around noon for Windsor, ON. 30 minutes later, fleetmate Algoma Intrepid was inbound to take her place.

Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Algoma Buffalo cleared 20:07 Friday downbound for Port Colborne with salt. Algoma Conveyor cleared Sunday 06:10 downbound with salt. Algoma Innovator arrived 23:57 Saturday and is loading at Compass Minerals.

Port Huron, MI – Sarnia, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Algoma Discovery remained at North Pier on Sunday and appeared to be sitting high out of the water. Originally due in Two Harbors, MN, this week for ore, she has since been taken off the Harbor Lookout schedule. It is very possible she may be going into lay-up until the fall grain rush, but that’s just speculation for now. I’ll report on her status again when something concrete is available.

St. Clair, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Paul R. “Big Paul” Tregurtha was more like Slow Paul this weekend, spending a total of 2 days, 9 hours, and 16 minutes unloading at DTE. The footer arrived Friday morning at 08:35 with coal from Superior, WI, and wouldn’t clear until 17:51 Sunday evening. The process typically doesn’t take anywhere near this long — poor weather in the area may be to blame, as coal is known to become a sticky mess when wet. The Queen is currently on her way back to the Twin Ports with the hope that this trip will go more smoothly.

Monroe, MI – Bill Kloss
New York/Double Skin 509A departed with a destination of Ojibway.

Toledo, OH – Bill Kloss
Hon. James L. Oberstar unloaded at Torco and then left to Duluth. Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader is unloading at Ironville. Also in Port is the tug and barge Albert/Margaret.

Marblehead, OH – Bill Kloss
American Courage left with stone for Fairport Harbor.

Sandusky, OH – Bill Kloss
John D. Leitch arrived to load coal.

Cleveland, OH – Bill Kloss
American Integrity arrived with 63,000 tons of UTAC pellets for the Bulk Terminal. Sharon MI/Huron Spirit departed with a destination of Courtright. Also leaving was Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Challenger. Federal Shimanto is at the Port and Sam Laud is on the shuttles. Late evening saw the departure of American Integrity to Two Harbors and the arrival of Algoma Buffalo.

Fairport Harbor, OH – Bill Kloss
American Courage delivered stone to Carmeuse.

Conneaut, OH – Bill Kloss
Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 paid a rare visit to Conneaut with stone from Calcite.

Nanticoke, ON – Bill Kloss
Algoberta is still at Imperial Oil. Frontenac delivered ore to Stelco then departed with no updated destination.
